A quick search shows that ShaggyAlonso in this thread for example: http://www.est1892.co.uk/forums/show...light=calzaghe said "Bang on the money. "A slap happy Welshman"

Pavlik would kick his arse and he knows it."

So, it's nice to see Hopkins expose some of the arguments people used to bash Calzaghe by comfortably beating Pavlik.
Lol. I didn't realise Calzone had beaten Pavlik this weekend?

"Hopkins beat Pavlik so that definitely means Calzaghe would whoop his ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11"

It's like saying "We beat Wigan and Wigan drew with Spurs so we're gonna FWASH them!"

My mind isn't changed - I believe Pavlik would beat Calzaghe and I believe he's been hypocritically swerving the likes of KP in favour of big money showdowns against past their peak fighters.

And I don't "hate" Calzaghe. I wonder if this thread-starter is Welsh by any chance......

Personally, I'd like to see Calzaghe beat Jones and then retire, as I can't see what he's got left to prove. I'd then like to see Froch start getting a few opportunities. I think he'd probably get exposed at the very top level with his fighting style, but he's one hell of a puncher.
      Bang on.

It doesn't even get close to 'exposing' anything. I merely stated an opinion and the opinion remains unchanged - unless, as I asked earlier, Calzaghe beat Pavlik this weekend?

Surely we can only go on what we've seen, any ones opinion that Pavlik would beat Calzaghe is just that..an opinion, the FACT that Calzaghe beat Hopkins then Hopkins took Pavlik apart, not just beat him but taught him a boxing lesson, at least gives us some sort of evidence to make a judgement on the outcome of a Calzaghe v Pavlik fight.

Ok it's not an exact science, as we know fighters have fought the same opponent twice with differing results, so just because Hopkins beat him doesn't necessarily mean Calzaghe would, but i was surprised at the ease with which Hopkins beat Pavlik.

Ps, My mother is Welsh, and she is not a Calzaghe fan.........

It's far from an exact science mate - in fact I think it holds no water whatsoever.

I thought Hopkins would beat Pavlik on points in a scrappy contest. Admittedly I didn't see the fight but it sounds like he absolutely dismantled him - which I acknowledge was not what I expected.

I never said you did hate Calzaghe. As you can see, I only mentioned you in response to a statement from Chris saying "no-one said that Pavlik would beat Calzaghe easily". In fact, lots of people have said exactly that, so I did a quick search for someone saying that Pavlik would hammer Calzaghe and yours was the first post that I found. If that post wasn't representative of your views then I apologise, but I wasn't doing detailed research or building a dossier of evidence, just showing that some people have said that in the past. Plenty of people in fact. And there are plenty of people who will never give Calzaghe any credit no matter what he does, whether or not you are one of them.

And I certainly never said that Pavlik's humiliation at the hands of Hopkins would mean Calzaghe would automatically hammer him. That is a daft argument, and gets you in to the old "beat the man who beat the man who beat the man who beat the man who beat Mike Tyson" sort of rubbish. I do think it completely exposes those who thought that Pavlik was some kind of scary invincible fighter that Calzaghe was running from though. Joe hasn't fought him yet because there's no point. Simple as. Same goes for Froch. They aren't big enough box office, and haven't achieved enough yet to make the fight worthwhile for Joe. He's got nothing to prove against them, and wouldn't make enough money to make it worthwhile giving them a shot.

A man who has had 45 fights, been champion for 11 years, fought the likes of Eubank, Lacy, Hopkins, Bika and Kessler cannot be accused of "ducking" fighters!

Granted Calzaghe has earned the right to fight who he wants to a degree and he has chosen to end his career and fight one of the greats in Roy Jones Jr, a champion at 3 different weights and a former pound for pound champion.

If he fought every up and coming "Next best thing" he would never retire! His record speaks for itself!

FWIW I like Calzaghe and agree with much of what Calvoboy says above, but his most ardent of fans are a bit deluded IMO. He’s nothing like the best pound for pound fighter in the world and is nowhere near Britain’s best fighter ever.

He’s never ducked anything? ‘Stay At Home’ Joe has fought in the States ONCE!

Most of thats down to Warren and his greed to have fighters on home turf, just a shame he didn't get rid of him years ago, probably would have had less doubters.

Totally agree he's not the best pound for pound fighter now with boys like Pacquiao and Mayweather before he retired but I think he's up there with Britain's finest!

Britains finest in order - Lennox Lewis, Joe Calzaghe, Ken Buchanan, and the original Welsh Wonder, Jimmy Wilde.

                        Thats my Britains Best.

I do like Lennox but Britain's best ever?

I'm only a casual boxing fan but it seems like for the later part of his career, Lewis made the most of competing in a very poor division and got lucky against Klitschko.

He also got knocked out by Rahman although admittedly his knockout in the rematch was sensational.

Lewis was the last of the linear heavyweight world champions. He fought the very best that the division had to offer and he defeated them all. He avenged his two defeats with comparative ease.

Without a doubt Lewis is one of the very best British fighters we've ever had.

As for knocking Calzaghe it seems to be the done thing. However when he's gone there will be a huge void in British boxing. We'll be left with the likes of 'Peoples Champion' Hatton and assorted WBU champs. Calzaghe is and always has been the real deal. It's a shame that some people don't see him for what he really is.
