Oh yes, I've just thought: it's a good idea to try out the energy drink/bar/gel on rides before the big day so you can get used to the effect which in turn will help you anticipate how much and when to use them. It's also a chance to see what flavours you like and whether any of them have any, um, negative effects on your guts (which I've heard can happen but hasn't affected me*).

    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Cheers m8, the last thing I want its to have the ertha kitts!!!

I'm going to throw some of these drinks/gels on to the seatpost order.

      Appreciate the advice.

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

Going back to what you said about getting back pain after a while in the saddle - some things to check are (you'll have to excuse me if this is already common knowledge to you)

1 Is your seat the right height for you? Too low is bad for pedal efficiency and can give you sore legs and lower back - too high and your hips will 'rock' and you'll get a sore arse pretty quick.

2 Are your handlebars the correct distance from your body/seat for maximum comfort? Back pain might indicate that you are having to 'reach' a bit too far.

3 What tyre pressures do you run with? (lower = more comfort at the expense of more rolling resistance) between 30-45psi are pressures reccomended for off road trails.

4 try using bar ends - being able to alter your ride position can really help with back pain.

Also, if you don't already have SPD pedals, then I'd seriously consider getting some and getting used to them now. They are much more efficient than flats as your feet never slip and you can get extra power into your pedal stroke by pulling one leg up as you push down with the other.

The last thing is that back pain is fairly common in cycling and tends to get less the more you train
