One of the William's brothers has bitten the dust, but will anyone be able to account for Serena...tell you what, she don't half work up a sweat when she plays...watched her match against Hanchukova, and she were dripping...i don't think light purple was a good colour to wear on a hot day, cos the sweat stains really did shine through!

How **** is women's tennis these days.

Clijsters' comeback and Oudin's emergence are the only positive things.

Must be as good as the mens, cos they get the same prize money.

With Ivanovic and Sharapova as top two, maybe it would have been as watchable as the ATP, but not with the pack of munters currently dominating the sport.

Women's tennis is currently suffering from a serious lack of talent and a serious lack of fit birds

And they have the worst, most uninspiring world no.1 ever in the hopeless Safina.

However, she is there on merit...other's may win the cups, but she wins the league and all that.

Oh, and as for the women receiving as much as the men...a game has just finished 6-0 6-0 in 49 minutes of play...either someone was on the take, or there's a huge gulf in terms of talent out there??

The only thing that matters is titles, and she has yet to win a Grand Slam. A total bottler.

No, the World Rankings are based on not just the slams, so Safina is there on merit, as she is the most consistent performer on the woman's tour. The only people who seem to have a problem with this are the American's, who appear to think that the Williams' have a divine right to be top of the rankings, when really they only play the slams, and very little other tennis. Well, that and the fact that Safina is, well, a bit of a moose.

This is true, the Williams sisters opt out of most of the tour slog so they can hardly justify being ranked at the top.

However, I don't think I've ever actually seen Safina play a game I've been impressed with. She must be good obviously, but every time I watch her games on tv she seems terribly average at best.
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
                            Mine angry and defrauded young?

She's been around ages, think she started around 2002ish and has had a good year and a half, reaching 3 slam finals and other finals as well...she's yet to win a slam, but she can win in finals. However, winning a slam will be her bug bear now, especially with the media focussing so much on that, and avoiding the fact that she consistently performs well in other events...i feel sorry for her, even the co-presenters on Sky (Rusedski and some dodgy looking bird) are mocking the ranking system cos she's top...weirdly, no one has complained about it before, but the minute someone comes along who isn't a favourite, people have a problem with it??

I think it might be because she's an incredibly boring tennis player and she's only top because, like you said, the Williams beasts can't be arsed playing every tournament (despite both of them being superior to Safina in every way) and the general level of competition has significantly gone down in the last couple of years.

Maybe Oudin and Wozniacki () are the new great hopes.
