    Pacquiao v Mayweather

If reports are to be believed, Manny Pacquiao’s much-anticipated encounter with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will push through in March. Evidently, Top Rank’s Bob Arum and Golden Boy Promotions’ Richard Schaefer have managed to iron out kinks in the welterweight bout, a not inconsiderable breakthrough in light of the star power of the protagonists and the potential of their set-to to break existing records on gate and pay-per-view receipts.

Information culled by ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael had Arum flying to the Philippines yesterday in order to get Pacquiao’s green light on the agreements reached by Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions. And considering the historical significance of the affair, the People’s Champ is expected to give it, never mind his mother Dionisia’s preference for him to stay away from the ring and his busy schedule leading up to the May 2010 elections.

Under the circumstances, it’s fair to speculate on Pacquiao’s readiness for the fight in light of his political commitments. Campaigning for a congressional seat, his popularity notwithstanding, is no joke, and figures to be an even more complicated undertaking if juxtaposed with the training he requires for the biggest encounter of his pugilistic career. Then again, it’s not as if he’s not used to juggling his time between his numerous, and sometimes conflicting, engagements. In fact, it has been often argued that he thrives in seemingly chaotic settings highlighted by the sheer number of his entourage.

In the final analysis, Pacquiao knows what’s best for him; not for nothing is he the only boxer in the history of the sport to have claimed a title in seven different weight classes. Should he thumb up the battle with Mayweather, he will most assuredly be ready to answer the bell. He understands that he cannot fail, and not just because his opponent is ripe for the picking.

Theres conflicting reports every hour, "he has to fight march 13th" "he cant fight in march to soon" "he has to fight in early may at the latest" "cant fight in may, has to wait" etc etc.

As usual it's Pacquiao's side that will cause the problems and Mayweather will probably get all the grief for it!

Well there is too much money involved for this not to happen. Pacman wants it and PBF cannot say no. I just hope it happens real soon while they are both in good shape

          This fight merits a 48/7 nevermind a 24/7

I'd read that it'll be 8oz gloves. They'll be fighting at 147 and it'll be Mayweather vs Pacquiao in the billing

If it's at 147 I reckon Floyd will push for 10 oz mitts.

Im a bit of a **** boxing fan but what impact does glove weight have on the fight? Is it just more punching power or what? Would heavier gloves put Pacquiao at a disadvantage?

Generally the lighter the glove the more damage that's done.

10oz gloves would probably suit PBF as he throws between 5 and 10 punches per round compared to Pacman who throws around 90.

Mayweather all the way for me! Marquez pushed pacman all the way in his fights against him but Mayweather just made him look like a clown and to me it looked like Floyd could have sparked him at any minute but just wanted to get the rounds under his belt! Although i do concede Marques was struggling at the weight! Pacmans last few fights have been againt guys that will stand in front of him and come forward into him so he can dart in and out and destroy them! Mayweather won't do that and is a master at pivoting on the backfoot with those left hooks! Though it will be his toughest fight ever id say...can't wait!
I'm normally not a praying man, but if you're up there, please save me Superman.

Don't know. Marquez, like Mayweather is a great boxer from a technical standpoint. It just seems that Mayweather's movement is much slicker and smoother once he throws a punch he really makes himself difficult to hit. The safe money is on Mayweather, but the way that Pacquiao dealt with Cotto impressed me so much I actually think that he could really beat Mayweather. Prior to the Cotto fight I thought that Mayweather would have it in the bag but now I'm not so sure, especially how well Manny punched at 147lbs.

Last time Pacquiao lost it was to Eric Morales, who pretty comprehensively outboxed him, but the way he's improved in recent years after his last couple very impressive fights I don't see him letting that happen again.

Also intrigued to see how Mayweather responds to finally taking on someone really really dangerous. Apart from a few fights like Hatton, Zab Judah etc he's dodged the best at his weight class. He's never fancied fighting the likes of Cotto (when eh was undefeated), Mosley, Margerito etc. So Manny gets a crack.

Can't wait for 24/7 and 24/7 overtime especially Mayweather Snr talking **** about Freddy Roach again like in the Hatton - Pacquiao one. One of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life. Too bad it'll be Roger Mayweather in there with Roach for the 24/7 overtime, although he's good value too I suppose. Love his "you don't know **** about boxing, mid west dominates the sport of boxing, all the great fighters from the midwest" tirades.

Those rare times Cotto stayed outside and boxed smart he was getting the better of the exchanges. Floyd isn't going to get in a war with Manny, not in a million years.

Floyd Mayweather Jr says he will knock out Manny Pacquiao if and when boxing's two biggest stars meet in 2010.
The American and the Philippines star, regarded as the world's two best pound-for-pound boxers, are finalising plans for a welterweight meeting on 13 March.
And unbeaten Mayweather, 32, said: "He's been knocked out before and he's taken losses. I'll be victorious."
The Staples Center in Los Angeles, home of the NBA's Lakers, is the latest venue to bid for the fight.
Promoters of both fighters were due to visit the new Dallas Cowboys stadium on Wednesday, but Mayweather's camp pulled out at the last minute.
It is likely Mayweather, who lives and trains in Las Vegas, would prefer the fight to be in his home town, and the MGM Grand casino would now appear to be the favourite to host the bout.

Representatives of the New Orleans Superdome are also said to be interested in hosting arguably the biggest fight since the turn of the century.
But any venue not in Las Vegas would have to offer more money because Nevada gives fighters tax breaks that other states do not.
Both Cowboy Stadium and the New Orleans Superdome can accommodate up to 100,000 spectators, while the MGM Grand seats about 16,000.
The latter venue staged both boxers' last fights - Filipino Pacquiao became a five-weight world champion following his WBO welterweight title win over Miguel Cotto in November, while Las Vegas-based Mayweather beat Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in September.
Pacquiao's victory over Cotto completed an amazing 12 months in which he defeated ring legend Oscar de la Hoya as well as Britain's Ricky Hatton.
With the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao expecting to surpass the previous record of $18.4m (£11,36m) for gate receipts, which was for Mayweather's bout with Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, promoters Bob Arum and Richard Schaefer are looking to maximise all possible revenues.
And Mayweather remains confident of blotting Pacquaio's record of 50 victories from 55 fights.
"Pacquiao's a good fighter but I've been around the sport a long time and I've dominated boxing for around 15 years now," the American said on HBO Television's Joe Buck Live chat show.
"No-one has defeated me yet so we'll have to see.
"The thing is, I don't want the fans to be really shocked by what will happen when we do happen to meet up because it's not going to be anything new."
Mayweather also admitted he has won and lost huge sums gambling on NFL matches in Las Vegas.
"Two weeks ago I won like a million [dollars], that was across a week of games, Monday night, Sunday and Thursday," he added.
"I didn't lose a million but I lost a couple of hundred thousand. Then I tried to get some 'get back' and lost some more money on Brett Favre [Minnesota Vikings quarter-back]."
