Latest news from the Weigh in

The Ultimate Fighting Championship kicks off the New Year without hesitation on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. A card cursed with casualties and more than a few false starts, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva headline UFC 108 in a bout that will help shape the title picture in the 205-pound division.

Evans and Silva made sure that, aside from the injuries that plagued this card, there would be no further hiccups from either of them. Both stepped on the scale at 205 pounds.

Evans is locked on target, saying he is “100 percent focused on Thiago,” not letting talk of a grudge match with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson hanging in the balance distract him.

Silva, who is looking to put himself in position for a title shot, said simply, “I’m here to fight and that’s what I’m going to do.”

There was a minor hitch in the welterweight co-main event. British fighter Paul Daley, making his second start for the promotion after a win over Mike Swick, tipped the scale at 172 pounds, one pound over the limit for a non-title fight. His opponent, Dustin Hazelett, had no trouble at all, coming in at 168 pounds.

Typically a fighter is given an hour to lose the weight he is over. Sources close the situation, however, told MMAWeekly.com that the Nevada State Athletic Commission would not allow Daley to cut any more weight because he “appeared wobbly” when examined by officials. Contracts will be amended and the fight will still take place. Daley is expected to be fined 10 percent of his fight purse, although commission officials were not immediately available to confirm the amount.

Heavyweights Junior Dos Santos and Gilbert Yvel were surprisingly close in weight, Dos Santos at 237 pounds and Yvel at 239. This is a poignant match for the division. Dos Santos is edging close to a title shot. Yvel is trying to prove his troubled past is just that and he is ready to make a run in the UFC.

The rest of the fighters made weight without issue.

The main card airs live on pay-per-view at 7 p.m. PT / 10 p.m. ET on Saturday night. At least two preliminary bouts will air live on Spike TV at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET.

MMAWeekly.com will have full round-by-round coverage of the entire fight card with the first preliminary bout scheduled to begin at approximately 4:30 p.m. PT / 7:30 p.m. ET.

      Main Bouts (On Pay-Per-View):
-Rashad Evans (205) vs. Thiago Silva (205)
-Paul Daley (172) vs. Dustin Hazelett (168)
-Joe Lauzon (155) vs. Sam Stout (155)
-Duane Ludwig (156) vs. Jim Miller (155)
-Junior Dos Santos (237) vs. Gilbert Yvel (239)
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

The UFC product is becoming rather sloppy.

Don't think they've had an event that merits PPV status since UFC 100.

PPV events when no titles are on the line? Not good, not good at all.

Utter bollix .. its about two guys getting into the ring and fighting ... no more no less, title fights are a bonus

Evans V Silva is a main event fight worthy of PPV status as you call it,
BJ Penn V Santchez again a great fight

Rather than go through each card I know the UFC has been effected badly by Fighter Injuries of late

I have seen every fight the UFC has ever put on and i am more than happy with the the promotions, in fact I prefer the cards with the lesser names on it as they tend to be the best promotions

Take UFC 95 in Manchester on paper one the worst cards but for many the Fightcard of the Year

Did you buy it on PPV or do you get it 'free' as part of your cable subscription?

My point being if you were in the States and you had to shell out $50 a pop for UFC PPV's you'd have thought very carefully about buying any they've put on since UFC 100.

Fair enough ... I download all UFC's we dont get it live here in Hong Kong .. I would pay for it online if they got there Pricepoints right ... at the moment its a joke and i am a huge fan .. about 30 to 35 quid is about right I would say and with that they should bundle all the pre fight countdown stuff aswell ... so true fanboys can clear off 5 hours !!

Silva baiting Rashad in that last round was funny. Rashad was very lucky to survive that round.

Yep that looked a little suspect if I tell the truth .. Evans was there for the taking and Silva had to know he needed to knock him out ... first thing that crossed my mind was betting

Pay Per View should be boycotted full stop.

Nicey, you are far to quick to accept a shafting

It all started with Bruno/Tyson. They don't accept that accross most of the continent and the public and many performers lose out in the long run. Look at the popularity (and ongoing earning potential) of someone like Bruno compared with Audrey or Haye to see that what they gain on the short term swings they lose out in the long run roundabouts.

UFC needs attention, it could shoot itself in the foot by restricting access to its product.

So a ppv format that no one pays for? Not sure what that is as such, surely anything televised has several potential income streams which are a bit of a trade off. fewer bums on seats paying more may or may not counter balance the increased advertising revenue from more bums on seats paying less and that's just a single event, when you bring in brand awareness etc there's more to consider. Boxing is dying a death due to PPV.

Some real premium events can make a selfish bonus from PPV, generally after already reaching a high level of visibility and support, UFC should take a leaf from LFC_TV, it's worth far more in advertising and exposure to just be out there. IMO of course!
