WBA heavyweight champion David Haye has denied betting on himself to beat Audley Harrison in the third round of their world title fight on Saturday.
The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) rules prohibit fighters from placing wagers on their own bouts.
"I didn't need to bet, I made enough money from the fight anyway," Haye told BBC Radio 5 live.
Haye added that it would be "harsh" for the BBBC to withhold some of Harrison's purse after his dismal showing.
In the aftermath of his demolition of fellow Briton Harrison in Manchester, Haye claimed to have "put a lot of money on the third round".

Haye admitted that he did not know it was against the British Boxing Board of Control's regulations to bet on when you were going to win a fight, and their secretary Robin Smith revealed his surprise at this, but accepted Haye was telling the truth with his denial of betting.

Fair enough . I think that rule is correct to be honest. Sportsmen should not be allowed to have conflicts of interest like that in their own sport in my opinion.

If only for the reason that punters betting on the outcome would effectively be being cheated by a contestant picking his moment.

Audley Harrison is facing being hit hard financially following his abject defeat to WBA heavyweight champion David Haye on Saturday.

Harrison barely threw a punch before being stopped in three rounds, with the 39-year-old being criticised for his performance.

And the British Board of Boxing of Control have confirmed that they will now "have to consider" withholding some or all of Harrison's purse for the fight.

"It is a very difficult course to take to stop someone getting paid when they have just frozen," said BBBC secretary Robert Smith.

"But rescinding some of Audley Harrison's purse is something which we will have to consider.

"You have to bear in mind it was such a letdown for the 22,000 at the MEN Arena and the thousands watching at home.

"The board have rescinded purses when we feel a fighter has not tried. He did nothing all night."

I hope they withhold all of it, they should rescind his boxing license while they're at it, the nickname Fraudley is well deserved

I've got to say I love Haye's gung-ho style. His style reminds me a bit of Mike Tyson, it's great to watch.

I truely hope he fight's the Klitschko's now as they will be epic fights. A great mix of styles. Will he be able to get inside and do some damage or will they just pick him off with their superb jabs and expose his suspect chin.

We all looked at each other when Haye said he had a bet on himself to win in the 3rd. Meh, we all paid to see one thing and that was Harrison embarresed. The snot hanging out of his nose was a bonus to me. To be honest though, if Sky made me pay for Paqiauo (sp?) I would have done that insted of Haye/Harrison.

I dont think he will, he wants to retire by October next Year; if he wants the Klitschko brothers, its now or never.

Haye's going to fight the oldest Klitschko who is 39 I believe. Probably just waiting for him to get a little older

But why are people not accusing the brothers of avoiding each other which they very cleverly are. There is no reason at all for them not to fight. There professionals. All this posturing too get haye to fight them is all well and good. But why not have the best brother fight him.

Haye's next fight is mandatory, so that gives them time.

I can at least understand their stance that they don't wish to fight each other. In a way I respect it.

It doesn't matter how much time, or money, you give them, they will never fight each other.

No way is he going to atually retire before then. Not a chance. Too many big pay days ahead of him to quit now. He'll still be boxing in a 3-4 years IMO. Hopefully byt then he will have had a 2-3 fights against the Klitschko's (including a rematch, and possibly one against both of them at the same time).

Am i the only one who thinks that Haye could spring a surprise over both Klitschko brothers? What he lacks in pure power he makes up for in terms of speed. I reckon he could walk away a winner in either of them fights.
