The first reason is that it's hard to do, but there's a second, equally important reason, that a lot of large chases run out of time and the match is drawn. We have nearly seven sessions here, let's be positive, it's more than enough time to tally up a big score slowly and carefully."

The 2 things that must be playing on Aussie minds are the mammoth 2nd innings England played in the first test, and also the fact that they should have got a much higher total themselves leaving the win a bit of a formality.

The collapse from their lower order gave England a chance.
