They've always been my favourite baseball team (franchise!?) due to their cool name.

Never looked out for their results and probably never will unless they're playing in the final of the World Series or whatever...

Probably be good for them to do well though so they don't become a drain on our owners finances.

      It's an acquired taste.

One thing I will say is that I believe that hitting a baseball, thrown by a major league caliber pitcher, is one of the most difficult things to do in sport.

I gave up after trying to hit high school level pitching.

Try hitting a hard ball with a stick no wider than 2 and 3/4 inches in diameter (at its widest) from 60 feet, 6 inches away.

It might come at you 75 miles per hour - or maybe closer to 100 mph.

And there's a good chance (but you're not sure) that it could be moving vertically and/or laterally up to 2 feet in any direction as it approaches you.

Now factor in the pitcher - who is capable (in varying degrees) of controlling a baseball, varying its speed and making it move right, left, down.

Oh - and you might get drilled in the leg, back or head if you aren't careful.

My point is - baseball is very difficult. I can guarantee that 95% of those who played the game can pinpoint the exact moment when they knew they weren't good enough to play at a higher level.

Which is what makes watching major league baseball interesting - we know we could never do what those guys could do.

And we marvel at their abilities.

Yeah, it always strikes me how thin the bats are in relation to cricket. It must be so much easier to play cricket. Baseball bats have the edge for violence though. There's nothing quite so much fun in Grand Theft Auto as beating a hot dog vendor up with a baseball bat. Lovely stuff.

Crap. I'm looking to visit NY in December so I guess I'll miss out. I've wanted to go to a baseball match for a while.

It's the first I've heard of it.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

If you are going to NY in december take plenty of warm clothes with you. I went in November 07 and have never felt cold like it.

It's probably in all our interests to take an interest in how the Red Sox are doing, and vice versa for their fans to keep up on our progress in the premier league.

I remember there was a report on SSN a year or so ago about some American Baseball player, mustn't of been any good as he was still only 25ish and came over here to live.

Anyway, he tried playing crickte, to the point were he could see himself playing professionally, having never hit a cricket ball in his life. He was gash, kept getting bowled out by the U14s think he had 10 attempts and got bowled 7 times, the other 3 he missed completely.

A guy used to play cricket with my brother and he grew up playing baseball at a reasonably high level. In one game he got 150 odd runs from 80 balls. Without fail he would hit at least one 6 in an innings if he got more then 20 runs. Exceptional hitter of the ball and have never played before.

I went at the end of December 2008 and it hit 65 degrees one day! Two days before it had been 38!
