It's like bread and butter league wins are great, but European Cups are greater

        For **** sake, Sergio.
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

Shame the kid slipped away in the final round, but brilliant to see the two Englishmen, and best players in the world, battling it out

Matteo's short pro career so far has been nothing short of incredible. The level of the game at European/US Tour is at completely different level, even to the the second level of the tour such as the European Challenge Tour. I've mentioned previously in this thread about a 21 year old lad, Matt Haines, from my golf club who is now playing on the main European Tour, he has played 16 European Tour events this year and has not made the cut the cut in any of them yet this lad as an amateur was ranked 2 or 3 in the world and finished second in the rankings on last years Challenge Tour.
If Matteo continues on at this rate he will be a true star of the European Tour.

Aye, Jas. I saw an interview with Chris Gane once where he was talking about prioritising his activity and how he'd love to focus on the Euro Tour but how it would seriously impact on his ability to actually make a living.

That said I think both our's and the USPGA's progression systems are ideal. There are some great golfers on both the Nationwide Tour and Challenge Tour and with a number of decent, decent players dropping in from the main tour every year when they lose their card the standard of competition is probably as near to the main tour as you can get. Maybe if someone like Ollie Fisher had chose to cut his teeth on the Challenge for a few years he'd be more successful on the main tour than he is today (like, would have stood a chance of keeping his card).

We need a general pro golf discussion thread on here. Can we not just change the name of this one to do that?

What a round from Rory! 65 and leads by 3. He's the 1st round king of the majors

Could so easily have been a 62 too.

Superb wasn't he! The inevitable crumble under pressure looms for him though

Not a great day for the other Europeans really. Sergio did well today, but he lacks consistency to challenge.

Westwood, Donald, Kaymer and the Italian trio all bombed! I thought they'd play well together!

Anyway Manassero is still on course to make the cut. I'd back him to anyway.

Is it just me or does Rory McIlory kinda look like a British version the the Da Silva twins?

They have a 10 shot cut rule so if he keeps cracking on like this he could decimate the field for the last 2 days
