Didn't they say at the time he had demonstrated that he'd deliberately missed the shot so it wasn't counted? (searches for my R&A rule book)

I'd normally Google it but as I'm at work I'm a bit reluctant to search for 'Tiger Woods misses bird'

yeah maybe - maybe he has shown enough to show that it was deliberate

i'm mean - common sense tells us that no pro golfer takes a fresh air shot on the tee! they may do from bad lies or trying to do something ridiculous out of a tree, but on a tee nah, they'd always make contact even if they just topped or duffed it under pressure.

But with rules, sadly in sport, common sense doesn't always prevail and i reckon it could easily have been argued it was a fresh air shot

for example, if i did exactly the same on the first tee in a club competition there would defo be some knobheads questioning it and saying it was a fresh air shot - but with tiger woods, it's a bit different

Can you imagine Woods taking an air shot in the rough and then vehemently stating it was a practice swing

            right - rule 14-1.5

Intent to Strike Ball Ceases During Downswing; Club Not Stopped But Path of Clubhead Altered to Avoid Striking Ball

Player decides during the downswing not to strike the ball. The player is unable to stop the club before it reaches the ball, but he is able to swing intentionally over the top of the ball. Is the player deemed to have made a stroke?

A - No. The player is considered to have checked his downswing voluntarily by altering the path of his downswing and missing the ball even though the swing carried the clubhead beyond the ball.
If the player had not successfully checked his downswing (i.e. he had struck the ball), he is considered to have made a stroke.
Any doubt regarding the player’s intent must be resolved against the player.

SO - basically you can take a fresh air shot...providing you can successfully argue that during the down swing you decided to miss the ball on purpose for some reason - in tigers case the loud noise, but on his down swing you can clearly see he has made an effort to miss the ball

the issue would be some smart arse cunt could take a fresh air shot and argue he did it on purpose and if the others in the group agreed, it wouldn't count

I'm hating it at the minute. Mentioned this in the Music thread but I just cant stop myself from going outside on the downswing at the minute. I'm shooting cricket scores! I've even resorted to booking in a lesson to try and work through it, although I've a pretty good idea what I'm doing, just not how to mentally stop myself from doing it

                  - well it's a bit of a thread hijack and we do have a golf thread somewhere but **** it

i'm actually completley fed up with it and said i'm not playing again until i get sorted

I've lost any idea what i am doing first time in my life really since i was 10 and first swung a club - and my mates a calling all sorts because i said i don't enjoy goin gup the muni and playing 6 to 9 holes in the evening (they are just hackers so don't care and don't understand that going up and just ****ting it for a few holes doesn't really interest me)

Anyway - played with my dad on fathers day and just decided thats the last time - a few examples

one tee shot - okish strike, nothing special, went reasonably straight, reasonable distance, no danger if it was my worst drive i'd be happy - next tee shot, great strike, ripped it....straight left out of bounds , next tee shot, again strike felt good - a big ****ing high slice

And the worst bit - i have zero idea what i did different on any of the shots.

Then to rub it - the golfing gods do this to you.....i walk on to a tee, long par 3 thats 230 yards into wind and i drill a 3 wood, that from the moment it left the club it was stiff, finished 5 foot away and i roll in for a 2

thats what annoys me - i hit some shots, that the degree of difficult is just impossible for some players - my dad is laughing calling me a dickhead, how can you ****ing hack it down a hole 3 bad shots, and then the 4th will by a flop shot over a bunker with no green to work with and i stop it dead a foot away

and it's that inconsistency thats pissed me off

i could walk onto the majority of courses tomorrow and i reckon i'd be confident of shooting around 90....

now if it was shooting 90 by taking 5 every hole...i'd probably take that, it's reasonably consistent and means i am knocking it about.

however - i shoot 90 by taking a 7 here, a 2 there, a 6 here a 3 there etc - i go from looking like a once every month or two hacker, to a solid single figure handicapper in just one hole

And thats why i'm not enjoying it

My plan is - when i get back from my holiday in july, i'm booking a course of 6 lessons with my old pro and my plan is too do this...

                  lesson

practice 2 hours on my own

play a few holes on my own

practice 2 hours on my own

                  2nd lesson

                  repeat

so that, after 6 lessons of a a 6 to 8 week period - i want to get back to some sort of consistency and idea of what i am doing - then i'll happily start playing some golf

It's horrible isn't it! My short game has always been tragic, although its improved since I switched my putter to a blade lately (got a Yes! Callie on ebay for £40) and stopped going airbourne with everything around the green. My driving and iron play has just gone though. Losing about 10 balls a round stuff. The bulk are fish hooking miles right but when I don't get that this horrible block sneaks in. I'm getting to the point where I feel like playing entire rounds with a 7 Iron.

Hopefully tonight this bloke will tell me what i think I know, that for some reason I'm over turning my hips on the backswing, Thats the only reason I can think of as to why I've started going miles and miles outside on the way down and cutting across everything.

If this doesn't work, well, I dunno mate. Even in the days of 4 putting everything I didn't feel this bad about my game.

Anyway, you sound as fed up as me so here's a bit of moral support for you and hopefully it'll end up applying to the pair of us!

Man you have just described me exactly. Dunno if I'm gonna make a two or an eight.

Dunno if I'm gonna knock it stone dead on the par 3 or shank it into a nearby bush.

Dunno if I'm gonna cream a 300 yard drive straight down the middle or duck hook one miles out of bounds.

And like you I have no idea what I'm doing differently, or what I'm doing wrong.

My routine has gone. I address the ball differently all the time, I swing it differently. I just don't know what it is I'm doing differently.

Had a ****ing mare the other day and failed to break 50 on the front nine for the first time since my teens. I'd never played the course before but still. Went out in 51 came back in 49. Embarrassing. ONE HUNDRED.

The other week I had my first round of the year - first for about 10 months - and shot 91 when it should've been 10 shots better. Some 3s off the tee, some chipping out sideways and stuff. So I thought I'd be on for a score in the high 80s.

                          100 FFS.

My head went after a while and I was finding myself behind a tree on every hole, chipping out sideways and either fluffing it and leaving myself still in the trees or getting a flyer and ending up behind trees on the other ****ing side of the fairway. Thinning everything out of the sand, making crazy heavy contacts and leaving stuff short....you name it. Felt like walking off.

I think that's most of us fellas. Unless you play and practice 3-4 times a week then your play's going to always be erratic.

I played 9 holes this morning, first round for a couple of weeks and my game sounds identical to yours (except the 300yd drive bit ). Parred the first and last holes, everything in between was unpredictable. On the 2nd hole I skied my 'drive' 100yds in to a wooded area. Then I decided to try hitting a low punch with fade with my 7 iron to get through a gap in the trees. That one went 170yds, ended up middle of the fairway, and was 100% as planned

                            Stupid ****ing game

i know i know it's just sould destroying

what really grates to me though is - I was ****ing good My last 'proper' round when i was keen, before i went to uni - i shot 74 gross, 3 over par, in a big name on board mens comp - 3 over par! as close to perfection as i could get - par'd every hole, tee to green in regulation and two putted - and just drop shot at stroke index 1 to 3, the three hardest holes

and because of those things - i have two major issues playing nowadays...

one - is personal, ie i still think like i did back then, i stand over shots and see what i used to etc

the other issue - my mates who are hackers are expecting me to turn up and rip everything, hole everything and break 80 every time - and they take great delight in ripping the ****ing piss out of me when i don't

so that's that! i'm not going anymore - not until, i've sorted out my swing - my setup, tempo, striking and consistency

Aye. When it's good it's amazing but when you crumble it's ****ing horrible.

My first round of the year, the other week, I strung three holes together (16, 17 & 18) at -1. I felt totally in control. Drive it down the middle, short iron into the green, two putts. Win. Then birdied the last (a par 3) by sticking a 7 iron to 8 feet and rolling it in.

Then I went and played like that the other day. Could've smashed my clubs to pieces.
