Parred the first and last holes, everything in between was unpredictable. On the 2nd hole I skied my 'drive' 100yds in to a wooded area. Then I decided to try hitting a low punch with fade with my 7 iron to get through a gap in the trees. That one went 170yds, ended up middle of the fairway, and was 100% as planned

    Stupid ****ing game
    - the other day with my dad....

drive cut a bit into rough, not too bad - i had just over 200 yards out the rough into wind....

So i thought, time for my rescue club - lovely taylor made one...

I **** you not.....I topped it, nearly fresh air'd, and the ball popped up in the air about a foot and travelled no more than two yards......

I walked straight up to it, and ****ing ripped it, drilled it, great strike, flew straight towards the green, then rose late into the wind before dropping softly about 8 foot away

My dad says, with a cheeky smile - "great shot" - most 'hackers' would have been buzzing

Not me - I'm there going "WHAT the ****...****ing **** this and ****ing ****e that and ****ing cunt there and **** you ball and screw you taylor made cunt!"

what really grates to me though is - I was ****ing good My last 'proper' round when i was keen, before i went to uni - i shot 74 gross, 3 over par, in a big name on board mens comp - 3 over par! as close to perfection as i could get - par'd every hole, tee to green in regulation and two putted - and just drop shot at stroke index 1 to 3, the three hardest holes

and because of those things - i have two major issues playing nowadays...

one - is personal, ie i still think like i did back then, i stand over shots and see what i used to etc

the other issue - my mates who are hackers are expecting me to turn up and rip everything, hole everything and break 80 every time - and they take great delight in ripping the ****ing piss out of me when i don't

so that's that! i'm not going anymore - not until, i've sorted out my swing - my setup, tempo, striking and consistency
Nightmare. I was never that good (shooting 74 for example) but I was a much better player in my teens when I played semi-regularly. I'm ****ing worse now than I was when I was 15. Won the ****ing Derbyshire Schools Cup I did (albeit nett prize )

It's worse for my Dad though. He was off scratch, spent years fluctuating between 1 and 2. Then went to 3. Off 3 for years, then 4, 5....now he's 57 and off 6 or 7 and it's killing him. I remember him holding the course record (at Matlock GC)....64. He'd regularly shoot 65, 66....now he's battling to break 80 most of the time.

That must be really hard and I can see it bothers him when we play.

and my dad the ******* just patronises me....

"you have got to be pleased with that son...forget about the top, that's a professional strike - surely you see that, you don't play enough so you should be happy with how you are doing yadda yadda yadda"

"yes dad....i'm ****ing estatic with that strike - but i ****ing topped the first one like i'm some cunt who has never played before in my life"

I get exactly the same off my Dad and I know he's right. "You hardly ever play so you can't expect to play great every hole".

I play something like 6 times every summer, max. Once a month or so. If that. Don't play in winter and so I accept that I can't expect to just walk on and shoot 80 odd like I used to. Deep down I accept it, but it makes it no less frustrating.

aye mate - i was off 6 at like 16 used to play in county events, team events for the juniors and the men's even though i was still a junior - all sorts....

even now 'years after my best' - i'll be in a bar talking to some mates, and good, well known, local golfers will be in there and my mates will say "that's so and so plays at such and such golf club and he's off scratch" -

and so and so turns round and see's me and it's all "hi mike...****ing hell how you doing, not seen u since you beat me 4 and 3 in some event or other - you still playing" - and all the lads i played against in the area are all off +2 +1 or 1,2,3 - no worse - and i'm like i've never played before!!

I always say to my mates - see i told you i used to be good - cause all these ****ers round the area know me and i've haven't played properly for nearly 10 years.

With your dad though - at least its age - it happens - i should be no worse than of 10, playing once/twice a week and at best of 5 oor better playing four timnes a week

              How often do you play?

To be honest I can't afford to play every week. I'm not a member anywhere any more, I don't do munis ....so I'm looking at around £40 green fees, plus lunch, snacks, other bits and bobs meaning a day on the golf course can be a good chunk out of £100. Can't do that every week, as much as I'd like to.

anyway - enough ranting! i am sorting it out!

i'm booking a course of lessons, and i am joining the local muni

it's a 'step' down from what i am used to be but i am looking at it like i am footballer coming back from injury/retirement and need to get match fit

the muni has some benefits to joining my old club....it's not as good a course but it's

minutes away from where i live - could walk there even with clubs if i wanted

it's dirt cheap - £100 a year to join - so if i join, and don't get back into golf, and stop playing - well it's not like i've lost anything

I know a few lads who play there every week in the comps - top lads and reasonable golfers (12 handicap round a muni) who i can play with in the comps

it's a short and easy course - so after some good lessons and practice and a bit of conistency i reckon i'll be knocking it round in respectable scores pretty quickly

if i **** up - who cares, no-one knows me there...i could think of nothing worse than re-joining my old club and posting 100 in a comp - "jeez see that...Mike B shot 100...what happened to him" *shudder*

and finally - the timing is just about right...i am going to join in August when i am back from holiday, and have 6 lessons over august and september and maybe play in the last couple of comps but my aim is to play in the winter league - this i see as pre-season for a footballer - basically short courses, competitive golf weekly, without any pressure or real meaning, so that come the start of the season next april - i will have hopefully done a series of lessons and played around 15-20 rounds in a winter league type competition, and i should be in a position to have a real go at the proper comps during the summer.

And nothing to lose - if i find i am getting really into it and good again - great i can always go and join a better club if i wanted - if i don't get into it - it won't have cost too much

                  nowhere near enough

                  i'd say this year...i've played

3 proper rounds on decent courses

                  2 full rounds on muni's

and probably a once/twice a month i go up to the local muni and play between say 5 and 15 holes - you know, go up at like 8pm, when the pro has gone home, and jump on for free and just see what i can get in - if the course is quiet/weather ok i might get 15 holes in - sometimes it's packed and i just play 5 but spend time on one quiet green chipping

so i'd say this year i have played golf about at most on 17 occassions - i used to do that a month lol

nowhere near enough to be consistent

                    Jesus - 17 occasions! That's 15 more than me.

And yeah I'd play every other day in my teens.

aye, thats the maximum tho! probably a bit less - the issue though is, and this is why i'm stopping in it till i get sorted - when i go once a month or so with my mates - i acheive nothing except get worse...

see we turn up - one lad just goes with a ruckasck full of lager, and we get pissed - the others just want a walk and too **** the ball as hard as they can a few times

I reckon the average hole goes - **** it off tee, walk and find it, **** it again - get near the green, maybe have a putt walk to next tee, have a can of carling.

                      - seriously - 4 of us get round 9 holes in about 50 mins it's not golf!! well not to me it isn't - i reckon i probably only hit about 30 shots - half a dozen decent, the rest ****e - it's a waste of time to me

I couldn't handle that ....total waste of time. If I wanted to get pissed I'd go to the pub or stay at home.

Went to Vilamoura in 2009 and the drinks cart tours around all the time. Nowt better than playing golf with a couple of Magners in 75 degree heat

it's why i get loads of **** - they call me a posh ******* and arrogant

once...just once...after 6 mediocre holes by me, i then hit a wonderful 7 iron into the green, and held the follow through as you do and commented - "at last!...a golf shot"

****ing hell i get ****ing ripped for that comment all the time

they love it though - they aren't golfers at all - basically instead of sitting in ours and getting pissed before we go out - sometimes, when weather is good we go the muni get a bit of sun and walk round and get pissed whilst doing it and when the ale runs out we walk in and go the pub

thats why i am not bothering again until i find some consistency and then can turn up and rip every drive, stiff every iron - just to shut the cunts up

Mate, I've been to the PGA at Wentworth a couple of times, the pros just make it look like a totally different game, seen them hitting 6 irons 180-190 yards...... out of bloody bunkers.
Definitely a good day out, I was supposed to be marshalling at Sandwich this year as my club had been invited to provide marshalls for the week. Was scheduled to do 3 stints of marshalling which would have given me a weeks pass to the Open, a pucker waterproof suit and food and drink on the days I was marshalling but due to the fact I have hardly played at my course for the past 2 years I decided I couldn't justify paying nearly £140 for my membership and not utilise it so with not renewing I also lost my week at Sandwich.
