    Chris Eubank v Michael Watson

Ok, so this one had a similair outcome to Benn v McClellan, but again - what a fight.

Chris Eubank was losing the fight and had been out-thought and out-fought for large periods of it. Watson was the most under-rated of the three great (super) middleweights England produced in the late eighties / early nineties, and quite possibly the most talented. (He easily beat Benn in 1989)

Eubank wasn't the same fighter after this one, he lost his edge and worried about hurting his opponents after the damage he caused Watson. You can see the punch that caused the damage, and the effect it had.

Watson was amazing in this fight though, he was at his peak and motivated by his dislike of Eubank. Again, so sad it ended up the way it did for Watson, but he gave one of the greatest fights I've ever seen in this one.

That 11th round was unbelievable. I didn't really notice it at the time but having watched it back a few times since then it's clear to me that I don't think Watson should have been allowed to come out for the last round. He looks completely unable to defend himself after the shots from Eubank right at the end of the 11th.

My memory of the first fight was that Watson should have been given it on points. He wasn't and they had to go again. Great fight but shouldn't have happened if th right result had been called first time round

Of course having googled it it's good to know that my recollection of the events in question is totally wrong (bar he should have won't the first fight)

A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

I actualy scored the first fight, there seemed to be a lot of controversial decisions back then and I scored every fight myself if watching live.

On my scorecard (for what its worth ) Eubank won the first 6 rounds and then one other in the 2nd half of the fight. Everyone remembers the end of fights more clearly than the start so I thought the outcry that Watson lost the first time was misplaced. Watson won his rounds more convincingly but Eubank won them clearly enough. It seems a lot of people don't realy understand the round-by-round nature of scoring in boxing.

The 2nd fight was amazing too, such a shame about then ending and its been a long slog for Watson, but looked a lot better last time I saw him in public. The greatest fight of that era for me was Eubank vs Benn 1. Just spine tingling from build up to finish.

In my defence I was only 11 at the time

You were probably in the majority regardless of age. I think I must be a couple of years older than you (born in '76). As I say there'd been a few contentious decisions so I started scoring all the fights myself (you should try it, it does add something to some fights).

It even got to the stage where i'd do my scoring then have a column next to it for american judges who favour coming forward and controling the centre of the ring over actually landing decent shots.

We shouldn't forget Collins with all the nostalgia for Eubank, Benn and Watson!

It's a strange one. I watched it with my Dad and both of us remember it as Watson winning the fight clearly. I think a lot of it is a consequence of what happened next and the subsequenty embelishment that has gone on over the years. This legend seems to have been created over the years in order to add some, well romanticism is the wrong word, maybe consipracy and drama to the situation.

I wonder how many people, like myself, also have a slight flaw in their recollection of why they went again so soon.
