Commentator mentioned earlier before the conclusion of the race that if there was a boat between them that all Ainslie has to do in the medal race is finish ahead of the Dane.

That happened so Ainslie and the Dane are tied on 26 each (total cumulative score of finish positions excluding the worst finish). Do they stagger start times so first to cross the line wins - Ainslie and the Dane going first? Otherwise surely we would have a badminton situation with competitors trying to do badly in the last race.
