Tell me how he isnt? Carl Lewis has a claim as he was so amazing at different events. But this guy has done it consistently for the last 3 Olympics. He is going for 2 more golds too.

Being a football fan during these Olympics is really depressing. The sportsmenship shown by everyone is fantastic. Everyone congratulates the winner. Thats what football should be like. Instead we get over paid idiots accusing each other of all sorts, then whinging about it in the media.

Lizzy Armistead was being interviewed the other day and she was talking about how she was shouting at the woman riding along side her saying 'push on and dig deep, you could win a medal here'

Thats what sport should be about. Not that depressing **** that we see every week at football grounds.

Because in swimming you have more opportunities to win medals.

Theres been many medallist that have won at a number of Olympics - but due to their events can only win a limited number of medals.

For example the 100m in track and field can only be won by running (on your legs ), theres no running backwards, hopping, running on your arms etc etc - thus someone like Usain Bolt can only win a limited amount of medals.

He's a special swimmer, the most decorated Olympian but imo not the greatest.
        We come not to play.

I think Michael Johnson made a similar point recently - that he'd have won a lot more medals if he'd been able to compete in more events.

I think I'd maybe go for Redgrave. To do it over 5 olympics spanning is phenomenal if you ask me.

So many great Olympians and he certainly is amongst them.

Personally I think the Womens beach Volleyball teams are the most special Olympians.

Phelps still has to be the best in all of those events though. Redgrave has done incredibly. But he did it in a team sport. So that's why Phelps would take it for me.

What a day of sport. Track & field starts, England v SA at Headingley, Murray plays Djokovic, and more rowing medal prospects

And the men will surely win the team pursuit and there's also the mayhem of the keirin.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Keirin is an odd sport. You chase a motorcycle for a few laps then bomb it to the end.

                        Yes, it is odd.

You should see the races where each rider has their own motorbike pacing them. That looks like Rollerball.
