Travelling with golf clubs?

Hey guys just a quick question for anyone who has traveled with golf clubs on a plane. I'm going to the States in a few weeks and plan on bringing my clubs I've got a cover for my golf bag but not sure if its sufficient, or if anyone has any suggestions other than buying a travel specific bag.

We went by an airline which only allowed one bit of luggage in the hold so stuffed a golf carry case with our clothes and everything else and then took a small bag on to the plane.

I wouldn't trust carrying clubs any other way, prob best to find out if you can hire them out there if you don't fancy getting a carry case

Meh, Been there done that CJ, It's actually a year ago today we split. Actually just going to see family and get away from work for few weeks as the 60-70 hour weeks are catching up on me.

We went by an airline which only allowed one bit of luggage in the hold so stuffed a golf carry case with our clothes and everything else and then took a small bag on to the plane.

Thanks Norbert, I had a better look and didn't realise you can put your club n bag into a travel bag/cover I though you just put clubs into one and you had to get a bag over there to use on golf course.

Being US we get a 2 bag allowance, and I'd prefer to take my clubs and get used to them as I've only had a chance to use them half a dozen times, I guess by time you pay to hire clubs once or twice that will pay for travel bag so will have to go look for one in the next few days.

rent clubs overe there..

i played in canada a few times this year and on more than one occasion. worked out at $35 a round for hire.. of brand new 2011 taylor mades. the additional cost of getting the bag on, then insure your clubs as they wont be covered by your travel insurance more than likely

and if you are like me you will come home and end up spending more money on a new 2011 taylormade 3 wood and rescue!

Will weigh up the prices of bringing my clubs vs hiring over there.

Ended up getting a travel cover, its big enough so I can just pack everything in it. Really wanted to use my clubs and get used to them.

The most common thing to go wrong when flying with clubs is opening up the bag on arrival and finding a broken driver.

I would also suggest finding something sturdy and slightly longer (a few inches) than your longest club. I use a broom handle. Put it in the golf bag (with your clubs) before putting the golf bag in the travel bag.

You are rolling the dice with the airlines either way, but if for some reason, it is dropped or stored the wrong way, there is something strong providing some support so the clubs don't absorb the shock and/or weight.

You can also buy a device designed specifically for protecting clubs, but I have found that a broom handle works just as well.

I went to the Canaries with 11 others on a golf break in Feb. One of the guys had a flimsy golf case. Would stood on the first tee and the head of his driver went further than the ball

Worst comes to worst and my driver snaps I can just upgrade to the new G20 driver (bought G15s not realising the g20s would be out the next month) I'll also be packing all my clothes n stuff in the bag too so they should be well protected.

I normally wrap a small towel around the drivers and woods shafts to give them some extra protection and also wrap a small towel around all of the iron heads, as these are what normally damage the graphite shafts on the driver and woods

Stuff the top of the carry case to the brim with clothes etc. and get insurance. It's the only way.

Mate of mine bought clubs in the US and was talked in to buying a brand called Excalibur. Hadn't heard of them before, haven't since and he was shafted (pardon the pun) for $400 IMO. This was mid-90s

I just bought a full set of Ping G5's from the us second hand great condition, full set of irons (steel) pw sw. Fairway wood. Hybrid. Driver and craz e putter. How much ye reckon?
