That appears to be part of the problem but these guys are so competitive and there is a lot of prize money at stake..

    Quite graphic this clip..

That crash was brutal. They really don't seem as concerned with safety in Indycar as F1.

He was a tester for the new chassis design being brought in for next year too. It was supposed to be designed with safety in mind. Unbelievable they're using a decade old design.

I think it's more the speeds tbh.. Maybe look at limiting it to 200mph..
I know people are always quick to post answers when things like this happen..

You just don't see as many F1 cars bursting into flames these days though, does that mean they are safer and better designed?

It's the amount of fire that is amazing. Not just his car, but several others as well. They really need to look at the design of the cars in that respect.

they are currently racing with car designs almost ten years old so yes F1 are better designed and safer.

They have new car designs which will apparently be much safer from next season - too late Dan Wheldon though.

I think another part of the problem is the walls and surrounding fences on some of these circuits, exposed Concrete walls and chain fencing which are designed to protect the spectators but offer very little safety for the drivers if they actually hit them

Like i said earlier hopefully this incident will bring around a dramatic change in safety in IndyCar otherwise it's just another disaster waiting to happen
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

oh god yeah, concrete walls and chain fencing when cars are going over 200 mph and in a sport where a fractional human error can cause a massive disaster

That is horrific. Is it Wheldons car that takes off like a plane and crashes into the barrier in mid-air?

As one of the drivers said it was like driving through something out of Terminator in the aftermath. The cars look way less safe than F1. A couple of them appear to just disintigrate on impact.

                    RIP Dan.

dont they use different fuel in indy as well? methanol or something like that?

also they are a world away from an f1 car in terms of construction.
