It's somewhere in between. According to the americans it's the world championship , but in reality it's the same as becoming league champions and there are no cups. But the league championship is organized in the format of groups and playoffs like at the WC or CL but with seedings and not draws in the last part.

Probably going to show my ignorance here but you have 2 divisions (conferences), the AFC and the NFC. Within these you have 4(?) sub divisions separated into north, south, east and west. All teams play each other in a league format (there's some odd part where the teams play other teams outside their division). Top two from each division go through to the play-offs. Then the winners of each conference's play offs play each other in the Superbowl.

I was supposed to go to the pub and watch it with my friends but decided I couldn't handle it. Have it on in the background and can't figure out what the **** is happening. I like most sports and follow them. Football, rugby, cricket, tennis and boxing are all simple for me but American sport is **** IMO. It's not only that I don't understand it, but the fact the clock stops all the time and goes to adverts. It takes like 25 min for 15 minutes of "play".

Quite enjoying this really. I'd love to be able to give some tactical insight, but I haven't really got a ****ing clue!

Got to love the American sense of occasion though.

Also, I don't see why it's necessary for them to dress up in a suite of armour.

It means they can absolutely pummel each other. Some of the tackling in American football is frightening.

Too right - some of it makes you wince when you see it.

i hate this sport as much as the next guy, but these sorts of put downs are so old hat. can we just take them as read and get on with our lives?
