    Interesting. Im totally new too it, all bar a bit when I was younger. But I was tempted to pick up a second hand bike and have a play around on it. I cant justify a big expense for something that I might not like.

    The seat was always the thing that did me in though. After an hour sitting on the thing I wanted to send the bike down the scrap yard.

      You have to let your sit bones adjust. The alternative is to wear padded lycra or padded shorts for longer rides.

        Mates just got this was about £600 and he said its a superb bike, great reviews and as you can change suspension good for road and off road.

            Funnily enough I've literally just sent an email to a colleague at work who is a keen cycler, with four bikes to get his opinion on.

            I can post the links here too if you'd like to offer your opinion too?

            Tempted to go and look at them later as Evans is open until 8pm, but it's raining so I might not.

                    Me too! I have a bike like that but I'd rather have a proper hybrid as I think the suspension is useless (it's a bottom of the range mountain bike) and the gearing is all wrong.

                        Reecie, if you're considering a hybrid, be aware that some are more like road bikes and others are more like mountain bikes. If you're going to go off-road regularly then I recommend not getting a bike with standard-sized road bike wheels as a lower centre of gravity is advisable; in other words, make sure the hybrid's balance between road and MTB is towards the latter.

                        Also, whatever the type of bike, be wary of getting a large frame.

                            Really? I've just tested them all and they're fine?

                            My colleague has just come back with this:

                            they all appear to be good names but have quite chunky tyres on what is a (comparatively) small wheel these will absolutely sap your energy when on the flats or uphill
                            Why is this so complicated.
