Another daft question to add to the list - what sort of shoes do people generally use for platform pedals?

It seems that proper MTB shoes are meant specifically for clipless pedals so I'll be taking my brand new lovely Pearl Izumi's back Should really do my research before buying I guess

Should I get some "flats" like these:

Or would any old sports/running shoe with a decent grip be just as good (and possibly cheaper)?

Those Five Tens you linked first are pretty much universally considered the best for grip as the soles are made from 'stealth rubber' - bit pricey though.

Any flat soled skate type shoe (preferably with a 'waffle' type tread) will be ok though.

My toes get incredibly cold. I wear:

1. Two pairs of socks: one regular pair and one pair of Woolly Bully socks when it's cold. I even wore two pairs of regular cycling socks until June this year, my circulation is so bad.
   
2. Oversocks.
   
3. Overshoes when it's cold and/or wet.

I believe you can get proper winter shoes that don't have the ventilation of regular cycling shoes but windproof overshoes should sort that out.

PSI on MTB -

Are you riding offroad Alex, or just on roads?

20-80 in favour of roads. We have worked out a 10 mile loop which includes mostly cycle lanes and then a short burst through a woodland area. Too be honest Id rather miss it off, but the 2 others I go out with love it.

Go for about 60 PSI then. I usually go for about 50 when I'm offroad downhilling, 60 is a firm enough compromise for 20% off road. Is it rocky?

Not really, more gravelly.
