It's a French and Latin word dormir. Mary, Queen of Scots, who spent much of her childhood in France and spoke the language fluently. She is also credited for bringing the word 'caddie' from France to Scotland.

"Dormie" is a match play term that means the leading golfer's margin is the same as the number of holes remaining, e.g., 3-up with three holes to play. Where does the word come from?

There are some legends floating around that Mary Queen of Scots had something to do with the origin of the term "dormie." It's true that Mary was a golfer, but there is no evidence - no reason at all to believe - that Mary coined the term or had anything at all to do with it.

The real explanation is much more prosaic. "Dormie" comes from the word "dormir," which shares a French and Latin origin. "Dormir" means "to sleep." "Dormie" means that a player has reached a match-play lead that is insurmountable (at least in matches in which halves are in use) - and so the player can relax, knowing that he cannot lose the match. "Dormir" (to sleep) turns into "dormie" (relax, you can't lose).

At least, that's what the USGA Museum says. Most dictionaries list the etymology of "dormie" as unknown.

Terrible start to the fourballs. Hanson and Lawrie 2 down after 2 ffs and Rory/GMac down already.

More interesting 'terminology' based facts from the beeb:

Many believe Phil Mickelson is nicknamed 'Lefty' because he plays golf left-handed - not so. Mickelson was actually active in student politics in his youth and was never seen without a copy of Das Kapital when on the college golf scene. Rumour has it that Tiger Woods, himself a keen historian of post-War industrial action in Britain, calls him Scargill. No idea what he's doing at the moment, there are no TV pictures or radio words at the moment...

                Not sure if serious??

I didn't believe it at first but it's amazing some of the **** between these people we only really know as golfers. For instance the real reason Woods fell out big time with Fuzzy Zoeller was an argument they had during a Pro-Am they played together once, about Orgreave and the role of the police.
