I've posted on this before, but I used to despise Mickelson, a completely irrational hatred, then saw an interview with him years ago and he came across superbly.

His response to Rose on Sunday was that of a confident competitor and a totally well rounded bloke. Applauding the monster putt was a great touch. He was right in Roses grill offering him congrats basically as soon as he holed out on the 18th as well.

Woods could learn a lot from him.

Ryder Cup 2012: Investigation after American fans abuse Europe's players, wives and late captain Seve Ballesteros

The organisers of the Ryder Cup have launched an investigation into allegations of obscene chanting directed by American fans at the players, officials and wives of the European team.

A number of stories surfaced over the weekend of isolated incidents involving fans shouting abuse and making insulting comments to the European team during matches.

During the fourballs on Saturday afternoon, one fan made an obscene comment relating to the late Seve Ballesteros which was clearly audible to television viewers.

There have also been accusations that American fans have been targeting the wives of the European team for verbal abuse, as well as a fan who taunted Justin Rose over the death of his father Ken, who passed away 10 years ago this month after a long battle with cancer.

Two young spectators were ejected from the course for shouting obscenities at Europe’s Nicolas Colsaerts.

But it is the abuse about Ballesteros that will be most shocking to those in Europe.

The fan at the 16th tee — at present, it appears to be only one — shouted the obscenity during the fourballs match between Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar and Paul Lawrie and Colsaerts.

The words “F--- you, Seve” were clearly heard by those watching Sky Sports’ coverage on Saturday evening.

The fan shouted just as Johnson made his tee shot. It has been common during this Ryder Cup for fans to shout slogans at high volume just after a player has made contact with the ball.

These range from the now-ubiquitous “Get in the hole”, to the increasingly popular “Mashed potato”, to the occasional beyond-the-pale comment.

The Spanish former Ryder Cup player and captain, who died last year, was a close friend of many members of the European team, and in particular captain José María Olazábal. His image adorns the team’s bags, and the navy sweaters worn by the European players yesterday were a tribute to him.

Tournament director Michael Belot said he was personally unaware of any comments made relating to Ballesteros and that no formal complaints had been made, but that he would be speaking to marshals and officials in an attempt to ascertain the facts and, if necessary, to identify the culprit.

In a separate incident, it emerged that some of the wives and partners of the European players were verbally abused by spectators at the 18th green on Friday evening.

The incident took place during the conclusion of the final match featuring Colsaerts, Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker. Kristin Stape, the girlfriend of Graeme McDowell, is thought to be one of those who was targeted.

There have been frequent reports of verbal harassment by American fans against the European women. Olazábal said he was not aware of the abuse, but said he would be speaking to the team’s wives and partners in an attempt to get to the bottom of the matter.

“I saw the crowds went across the ropes and were running to the edge of the green,” he said of the incident at the 18th green. “I don’t know if that was expected or not, but I would have to talk to the wives and ladies of the team if that was the case.”

With the stakes raised during Sunday’s singles matches, there were fears that the ill-feeling in the crowd could reach levels not seen since the bad-tempered final afternoon at Brookline in 1999.

There have been a number of flashpoints between European and American fans over the course of the weekend, largely referring to the cheering of bad shots and missed putts by European players.

Speaking before the tournament, Westwood voiced his fears over the possibility that the boisterous chanting of some American fans might overstep the mark, citing his own experiences during the Ryder Cup at Valhalla in 2008.
“All of the abuse that I got was fairly nasty and pretty shameful,” he said.

“Some people don’t know the difference between supporting their team and abusing the opposition team, which is unfortunate.”

Maybe that was being in the company/influence of Bradley who appears a total ****ing tool

I thought Woods was quite gracious in the end and its notable that for all Woods outward facade he apparently spent most of his time in the company of Europeans after each of the days had finished

Hmm. Good point on Woods. I think I have been lead too much by the press on this who as ever are gunning for him. Just read a few comments from him and he did seem really quite gracious. I still reckon Molinari may have choked on that putt though . He must have been made up when Woods let him pick up.

I'd love to know which Americans did turn up. Anyone know? I saw an interview after with....er....I think it was Westwood, who said most of the US team were friends of his and he was looking forward to sharing a beer with them later. He said "my beer will taste nicer than their beer" .....they were clearly expecting the whole team to show up, as they normally do.

Dustin Johnson made Colsaerts putt when he had two putts to win from 5 feet. That was very poor.

The point is, there was no pressure. Victory was already secured. I guess we will never know, so maybe we should leave it at 50/50 chance

I genuinely think the Americans havent done themselves any favours, their actions on and off the course havent endeared them to anybody and have completely gone against the spirit of the Ryder Cup

When people like Nicklaus are calling them out on these things you know it isnt in the spirit of the game
