You know, Nige, just when I start to think maybe I've been a little harsh over the years, you say something totally moronic like this..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

We're all moronic in a way in here. Isn't it ironic that you say something like this to me, you of all people.Originally posted by Red Setter View PostYou know, Nige, just when I start to think maybe I've been a little harsh over the years, you say something totally moronic like this.
Are we winning?

Yes! As a child I had an embarrassingly garish cycling top with some sort of milk race branding on it. If I find any pics I'll be sure not to post themOriginally posted by BobTheCharmer View PostWho apart from neil remembers the milk race?
So trueOriginally posted by captainfog View PostShaggy thinks he is looking forward to it until he realises it's like the road race in the Olympics only instead of lasting 5 hours it going to last weeks. Then his excitement will turn turn to bafflement, which will in turn turn into anger.

So Shaggy, what did you make of the team time trial?

I can't believe Movistar did so well yesterday. Castroviejo is an excellent time triallist but the others...? I read that the team is based in Pamplona so I suppose that could explain it - knowing the roads, etc.
Contador looked very strong. I hadn't noticed (or maybe I'd simply forgotten) that Van Den Broek is riding the Vuelta - he's definitely a top contender. And Rodriguez must be considered to have an excellent chance, what with all the uphill finishes and time bonuses on each stage. Add Froome and you could have the top four there - not at all sure about the order though.
The only thing clear from yesterday is that Cobo won't win, which is good.

Re. the coverage, I watched only the last twenty minutes of ITV4's highlights show which I assume has been cobbled together quite quickly on the back of this sudden upsurge of interest in cycling. I'm not a fan of commentator Anthony McCrossan's voice but he's very knowledgeable and makes fewer mistakes than Phil Liggett (let alone Hugh Porter who did the BBC's Olympics coverage).
As for Eurosport, I'm looking forward to David Harmon's return on Monday. I quite like Carlton Kirby but he can be irritating at times and I know he got a lot wrong yesterday. The race started in the main square and finished in the bull ring - I know, I've been there. (I even saw where I was standing when at six in the morning, three local lads appeared at the top of the city wall wearing wine stained whites and red scarves and singing "Sammy Lee, Sammy Lee, Sammy Lee".

Good win for Démare in the Wattenfall Cyclassics in Hamburg. He's a threat to Cavendish in the next few years..

And the Vuelta immediately goes its own merry way, with a completely weird sprint finish in a town in the middle of nowhere. It's so different from the Tour.
A good sprint from Degenkolb. He's always likely to win a (slightly) uphill sprint. Swift went too early I thought but fortunately Davis f*cked it up as usual.

Wow, what a finish today. Contador was like a man possessed. Fine riding from Valverde and Rodriguez and Froome played it very well, a really mature, calculated ride.
These time bonuses are really going to f*ck things up though. With so many uphill finishes and the likes of Valverde and Rodriguez to swipe the wins, Froome needs to be careful. But I haven't looked at the parcours so maybe there will be minutes out into even the strongest riders in the final week.
There I'm referring to Valverde and Rodriguez. They can both climb and they're very explosive but I've never been convinced they're that strong in the really high mountains. Rodriguez did ok in the Giro of course - getting third on the Stelvio for instance - but somehow he does't seem to me to have the quality of someone like Contador or even Froome. Maybe that's unfair - I guess we'll see.
And Valverde, I forgot about him. Specifically I forgot he'd won the Vuelta so he must be a contender if only for that reason. Again though there's something that doesn't quite convince.
But, like I say, if either of those two hangs in there on the big climbs, then it could come down to the time bonuses.
I can't think anyone is interested in all this but what the hell, I enjoy gassing on about cycling, even if no-one's listening.
I'm now watching the USA Pro Challenge. Wall-to-wall cycling.
