The Ryder cup for me....and not because "it's fresh in the memory"

It's a bit more personal for me...as good as all the other achievements where and I really enjoyed watching them all...golf, alongside football is my sport, I've watched every Ryder cup since 1993...and 2012 was unbelievable, never seen anything like it...every day was intense, every single shot meant something and the drama/comeback to win was mind blowing

So for me golf wins and yesterday is up there alongside Istanbul (maybe Istanbul just edges it )
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

I suppose if you think sport is entertainment then yes, it was dramatic, a great comeback and very entertaining if you like that sort of thing. But it wasn't even the best team performance - the European team was second best for two days out of three.

I realise I'm biased but in terms of a British success, Wiggins winning the Tour is unparalleled, Sky got first and second (first time that's ever happened I think) and six stage wins out of twenty, and totally dominated the race for three weeks with not a single off day. It was a monumental achievement. And that from a team based in a country with not a single rider in the race only eight years before.

And the Olympics was brilliant, easily surpassing the antics of a load of silly men in bad clothes knocking a little white ball about while a load of obese donkeys brayed all around them.

        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I think Murray and Wiggins's successes and achievements are difficult to split.

Re the Ryder Cup, of course Europe's was the best team performance - they won. Matters not that they were second best for two days - they won.

Europe have now won 7 of the last 9 so in that sense you could say there have been more notable achievements, but of course it was the unbelievable manner of their win that was so wonderful and gripping.

Not that it's important but they should call off the award of a SPOTY - they just should commend British sporting achievement. Commend them all equally.

Ryder Cup better than the Olympics? THE OLYMPICS? Good one

Yeah they won and that's vital but, er, Sky also won so that kind of makes them even in which case you need some other criterion for splitting them. It was dramatic and gripping all right but, as I said, Sky totally dominated their event (indeed their sport for the whole season) - less dramatic entertainment of course but technically and tactically flawless.

Murray's had a great year. I'd still say Wiggins' is better - how many other tournaments has Murray won for instance? Wiggins won three other prestigious tours (including two that are probably the most prestigious outside the three Grand Tours), something that no-one else from anywhere has ever achieved, as well as his big win and his Olympic gold (also never achieved before). Set against that Murray has had the weight of expectation on his shoulders and is up against some of the best players ever to play the sport. And of course tennis has long had a much higher profile than cycling, due to the historical accident of having one of the great tournaments in the world here.

I agree about calling off SPOTY but of course they won't. If they were ever going to do it, then 2009 would have been the year to do it .

Anyway it's such a nice change to have so many sporting success to argue about.

Sorry I thought you meant they weren't the best team in their encounter.

                  Yes it is

Murray won a tournament in Australia in January, before losing the semis in the Aus Open when Djokovic edged that five set classic.

He obviously won Olympic gold before winning the US Open. I think the fact he's having to conquer arguably the three best players of all time adds tremendous weight to his cause.

Your perspective is totally one-eyed - you hate golf.

I loved the Olympics and the Ryder Cup, as did most of us who followed the golf, and so therefore our opinion is more worthwhile.

It's a lot closer than you'd think. Yes the Olympics Games were phenomenal but the Ryder Cup is a unique and wondrous competition.

My first Ryder cup was brookline in 99. I remember watching it with my dad and having that feeling of WOW as i was only 16 and never really paid much attention too golf. Even though we were so close too winning it the pain i felt when we lost it has stayed with me with every Ryder cup and the pure european domination since 99 and every win has felt special.

Ever since Brookline i have fallen in love with Golf and more so the Ryder cup as it is what sport is all about.

As good as the Olympics were this Ryder cup win and team wins hands down.
