    Bernard Dunne

Anyone watching his fight against Esham Pickering tonight?
Should be a good fight, am expecting Bernard to make a statement tonight against this slippery Esham fellow, cant see it being an early stoppage or anything, but hopefully its a good fight.
For Overseas reds (non Irish) its on RTE2 i think if you have that.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

    * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

Dunne to win by stoppage. I think Pickering is hyped up too much. Would like to see Dunne and Hunter meet at Featherweight.

I turned the fight off, I was disgusted at the way the crowd booed and whistled over the English national anthem. Us Irish have to be the most hypocritical people, if that was done to the Irish national anthem, they would be up in arms, crying about ignorance and shouting it was a disgrace.

Just heard the result, Dunne won on points. No idea how the fight was though as I didn't watch it.

Well just in now from a poker night, we put the cards down to watch the fight. Dunnes hand speed was phenominal at times and the range of punching very impressive. He tired a little towards the end though as Pickering seemed to grow in confidence realising this, but it was too little too late.
Didnt take anything bad out of booing the national anthem(dont think they should have played them anyway), happens all the time in sports, especially football, this was the biggest boxing match in Irealnd for quite some time so can understand why the crowd wanted Pickering to feel the hostility by booing etc. however, a few coins were thrown which is bang out of order.
Anyway id rather not get cought up in the politics of some booing which goes on all the time in sports. Its almost expected.
The end result, the two lads had a great fight, Pickering showed great spirit to come back, and what an atmosphere, I doubt Pickering ever seen anything like it before, a sold out point depot for a boxing match is a hell of a venue, literally. was like a football ground with upper and lower terraces right around the ring. Would like to see Bernard tested against some world class opponents now and hopefully for a world title shot, deffinately has the tallent to make his mark.

I have to disagree with your take on the booing. It was bang out of order and just continued to show how ignorant Irish "sporting" fans can be. We are a nation of bloody begrudgers. I can imagine the field day the press would have had if it had been Dunne fighting in England, and the Irish National anthem got that treatment, and if Dunne had coins chucked at him, and got filthy abuse walking to the ring. And don't get me started on the jingoistic need to have a guy on a mic winding the crowd up before the fight, getting all the "Ireland" chants and playing various "Ra" music between fights on the undercard.

Small time organisers, small time "fans", small time mentality.

I have watched and been to fights in many countries down through the years, and Ireland is consistent in it's amateur way of promoting any big event (even though this fight was only for the European title) in the fight game.

                      over reacting mate, big time.
If the irish national antem was played in an away boxing match, id expect it to get booed. I think your being far too sensitive. turning off the fight because of this???. you missed a great fight.

Don't think so, it was a total lack of respect for Pickering and any other none Irish fighter on the bill last night. It just seemed like the latest bandwagon for people to jump on. The soccer team is **** so lets hop on this sport kind of thing. I know if I was still fighting competitively, a reception like last nights would have fired me up to really go out and hurt the local boy, to ram it to the crowd. I have fought in other countries and never have heard that kind of crap encouraged on the mic , at that level. And I would not expect any National anthem to be booed. It can be played in England, Scotland and Wales with no booing before high level amateur fights, so why not the same in Ireland?

I hate this kind of thing in boxing, as both fighters should get kudos for getting into the ring, especially when the fighters are relatively close in strength, endurance and ability. I saw some of the highlights this morning and those at ringside looked gormless especially that muppet that was in Westlife, he seemed to be looking around to see what others were doing so he would know when to cheer etc.

The best fight I saw in the Point depot was when I there to see Lennox Lewis
fight. It was a night where there was a hardcore of boxing fans, ex fighters, current fighters etc made up the majority of the crowd, and each and every fighter got cheered going to, and especially, coming from the ring.

sorry Jaco, I know what you mean about booing, im not one myself for that at national anthems. but im not shocked, offended, or supprised by it, it mean alot for dunne and they wanted it to be intimidating for pickering, and they did just that, I personally know Bernard, and his family after having boxed with him before. He is from one of the worst areas in Dublin, just down the road, I think asking for any crowd in the world anywhere, where someone is coming from such an area, and expecting nobody to boo is asking the impossible IMO. I think this in no way should take anything away from Bernards night in what was a great fight to watch. I wanted to be there myself last night, and will be going to the next fight.

Dunne picked up the win, and I am in no way trying to take anything from that, especially as I thought he would win, regardless of what the crowd/organisers did. It just soured my viewing, more so because it is the country I am from and I felt embarrassed by it, especially when I consider how well I, and other boxers I know and coached were treated in other countries.
