That particular problem, not often. Punctures though... It depends when they happen. He was unlucky it was on the final climb.

He had a puncture late in stage 1 of last year's Tour of Romandie, got a new bike, was led back to the front by his team and won the sprint for the stage.

And he also had a chain problem in the time trial in the same race. It was the final stage but he was so far ahead on the stage that he didn't lose all his advantage and hung on to win the stage and the overall.

So yeah, it can happen. But he had a perfect Tour de France, a perfect Paris-Nice, a perfect Dauphiné and and a perfect Olympic time trial (unlike the Spanish champion who was a contender for the podium but had a mechanical problem).

So maybe he's had much of his bad luck for this year. But Nibali is looking strong, it's going to be a hell of a battle between them at the Giro.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

It turns out Wiggins' spare bike didn't have the right gearing either. That's a f*ck up the Sky mechanics won't repeat.

I'm willing to bet and I don't gamble.

It's a certainty. So how much would you like on it?

                  Ok.

Lucky for the mechanics it happened at Trentino and not the Giro d'Italia. That could have cost at least one of them their job.

And that's why it won't happen again.

Massive crash at the Tour of Turkey today.

Neil, how do you rate Daniel Martin?

It was a great win the other day, La Doyenne is an iconic race. Brilliant support from Hesjedal too, he's going to be strong in the Giro against Wiggins and Nibali.

When Martin's career is over, last Sunday's win could well be the greatest victory of his career. I don't see him really as a contender in the Tour de France because his time trialling just isn't good enough. But all three Grand Tours change all the time because of the course differences - like this year's Giro should suit Wiggins whereas I don't think he could have won last year's because there were too many steep climbs and not enough time trialling to match his abilities. So maybe a very hilly Grand Tour with a long team time trial and an individual mountain time trial might be within reach for him.

But a single Liège-Bastogne-Liège victory makes his career anyway.

Am I right to assume he's had a lot of coverage in Ireland in the last few days?

Great ride from Froome (and Spilak) today in Romandie. Barring disaster Froome should win, it's a very healthy gap he's got.

                          Tour of Turkey - hmm.

Is Wiggins going to tow the line later in the year and ride for Froome?

                              I don't know. It's a good question.

I reckon he probably will if Froome is designated leader. But I think he might be angling for that role himself. Although I think it's true that Froome is designated Tour leader as things stand, it's very clear that the final decision is yet to be taken.

It will come down to performances in training in the build-up and obviously Wiggins' condition after the Giro is crucial there. I doubt really he can compete for the Giro and have a realistic chance in the Tour, especially since the route apparently favours him less than last year's.

It must be tough going in as the defending champion but effectively there to help someone else win, it'll be interesting to see the dynamics this year between the two.

FWIW Froome was hugely instrumental in Wiggins winning last year and probably deserves his chance to go in as the tour leader especially since the course probably isn't as favourable for Wiggins.

How is Contandor getting on at the moment?
