Just got signed up with a personal trainer. Going to give me some help with upper body strength. 140 quid for 4 hour sessions and a full plan and nutrition guide. Just give me that extra omph to keep going and to use non machine weights.

I was thinking this as well

These before and after pictures are like most of them you see. The first one is closer and the after one is taken further away or with not so much zoom.

It is difficult to make any comparisons with these types of pictures

That's me relaxed in both pics, I can't take selfies for the life of me

Was given a Battle Rope work out today in the gym. **** ME! Those things are savage. My arms felt like they were gonna fall off

Does anybody recommend any pre-workout supplements that have worked for them?

I am strongly against supplements. I have gym friends and all they talk about is what supplements they are taking and never what exercise they actually do. It winds me up. I think the whole protein shake thing etc is a con.

Just do some hard exercise (mostly cardio, strength training maybe once twice per week max and stretch regularily). Drink water to keep hydrated (but not too much-the 2 litres per day thing is also bullcrap) and if you need some protein have a glass of milk.

Oh and mix it up lots. Your body adjusts and stops trying so don't get stuck in a rut. Try something new every now and again, like me and TRX suspension training at the minute.

Don't neglect your core. It is the corner stone of everything and the first thing to go as you get older no matter how active you think you are.

In general I think you have a point. But some supplements that people take like the fat burners, BCAA's etc have some side-effects. I know a lot of people at my gym who come to the gym spend about 30 mins chatting and 20 odd mins lifting. They are built and lean as anything. Don't lift spectacular amounts. Have heard them talk about steroids and fat burners. Joke really. A cheat to get a great body

But I think protein shakes are pretty harmless. They can be quite useful in replacing vital nutrients burned during training and aid in muscle repair. But then again I know some older guys who don't take anything at all and just eat normally

I have protein shakes but won't take the other stuff, not even creatine. I'd be f*cked if I wasn't having a protein shake post work-out

I don't bother with protein shakes- mainly cos they make me fart big time. Just eat loads. I lift heavy 4 times a week so most people should be ok without.

Extra protein is probably a good idea if it is body building you are after. My thing is running and the gym work I do is to enhance my running.
I don't really get the whole body building thing. It's all a bit vain and pointless and you aren't really that fit and healthy on it. In my opinion martial arts are the way to go for all round health, although I have had to virtually retire now due to some hardcore and ill advised training from the old days.

BCAA's is a good shout...will help keep amino acid profile high in your blood stream so you don't break down too much muscle. Good if you're running & not taking protein shakes post workout.

Double espresso/strong black coffee is more than enough for a pre workout boost.

                            Bump.

Not done anything since October 2nd and have decided that I'm going to go for a run tomorrow. I've laid off the grog for a week (apart from 20-25 units consumed at a party on Friday night) and so I'm ready for it. I need a challenge though, a new target, so have decided to attempt to get my weight down from 14st to 12st 6lbs without dieting before Xmas. I reckon it's possible if I can do 30k a week running and another 10k of rowing. Here goes!

I went down from 15'6 to 13'8 in about six months by cutting out the obvious things like pastry, belly pork, fry ups and other things I loved
and going for a brisk walk every evening for about 40 minutes

kept the weight off quite well although getting harder now the nights are dark and salads are being replaced by stews

will never get back up to the 15 stone area again though, I weight myself most mornings and if over 14 stone go easy for the day, a 6 inch subby rather than a foot long for example

                              Keep this quiet
if you carefully grind off the edges of a 50p coin you can use it as a 10p
