    Sporting Injuries thread.

So, I have pulled a calf muscle really badly playing tennis this morning. Does any one have any advice on recovery? Or any tips on discovering the extent - I can't stretch the muscle at all.

It is an injury I used to pick up when I did a lot of running, but this one feels really bad.

I'd try to go to a physical therapist, I'm recovering from a ruptured tendon and I found that the PT was way more helpful and knowledgable than the doctor. After just one session I found a good bit of difference and I'm sure a PT would massage your calf or something, it makes a whole lot of difference.

My client once did the same as you while playing Tennis!
I had him rest it for a couple of days then got him started on some ankle mobility exercises and calf stretches. You'll need to stretch both calf muscles, gastroc & soleus. Once you are able to move a bit better then focus on slow negatives to strengthen the muscles back up.

      Mobility Exercises:
      - sit on a chair and write the alphabet with your foot.
      - Sit on a chair and point your foot to and away from your shins.

      Stretches:
      - Gastroc Stretch, take a normal step forward with one leg, then lean into your front leg while keeping back leg straight & both feet flat on the floor.
Soleus Stretch, stand facing in front of a wall, place the foot of the leg to be stretched touching the wall, now bend that knee and touch the wall. Your foot should remain flat on the floor. Move the foot back a CM and take your knee to the wall again, continue this until the heel is no longer able to remain on the floor. Repeat with the other leg and measure the difference in space between foot and wall for bot legs.
Aim to hold each stretch for about 30 seconds and repeat 2-3 times.

Hope it recovers quickly mate, i remember my clients calf would seem normal and then he'd suddenly get a shooting pain through it once it stretched a little! I think he only had a grade one tear so i got him back to being ok in about 4/5ish weeks!

Thanks for that. Good to get some proper advice

I've read the gradings and I can't decide which it is, I think it might be a grade 2. Walking is really difficult, I'm properly limping, so I am trying to rest it as much as possible.

I've been absolutely loving my tennis, so am going to miss not being on court.

No probs! Getting injured when you're on a role sucks. Proper set's you back

Haha Danny Boy needs a rocket up his back side! I'd love to work with professional athletes.

I am still weak as **** following my food poisoning. And my back is still being a ****. Really hope I can get back to decent numbers, I usually recover quicker than this. Piss poor.
              3rd place. Worst champions ever.

Was doing calf excercises with my PT following my tendon injury in December, that is one seriously puny and weak calf, if I'd be cannibalized today, they'd throw away the left leg

I've been running, cycling and swimming.

So... I tried to play Tennis again today. It's too soon, I pulled up after half an hour, then stopped. Minor setback. Gutted.

Starting to sympathise with Daniel Sturridge.
