    Sumo

    Anyone else watch sumo regularly?

Thought I’d see if there are any others fans on here as the first tournament of the year starts on Sunday.

I was thinking of getting back into sumo. I used to enjoy it when it first appeared on British tv. The last Yokazuna I remember seeing was Chiyonafuji which shows you how long ago it was.

It’s a good time to get back in to it. Lots of exciting youngsters taking over, a bit of a changing of the guard. A couple of them have set records for how quickly they have been promoted to the top division.

The current Yokozuna is struggling with serious injuries and barely competes right now but a guy named Kirishima could become a Yokozuna in this tournament if he wins.

It’s on NHK world news on sky or on their website. They have a 30 minute highlight show for everyday of the tournament.

Thanks for that . I've got the first one recorded on my virgin box and ready to go once Mrs Venton is sated by whatever tripe she has on at the moment.

Enjoyed the first one. Need to go back and bone up on all the ritual around it and the rules. Like what are those spiky things they put on their knickers?

After the highlights show there is a little 5 minute show called sumopedia that goes over rules, traditions, techniques, a bit of everything.

Some big match ups to start with and it’s good to see Terunofuji back. He’s missed so many tournaments. Not the same without the only Yokozuna.

I used to ****in love Sumo when it used to be on late on Eurosport years ago. Weirdly compelling. Instant expert stuff as well - "oh that wasn't a confident throw of the salt there".

Exactly. And the sabre-rattling stomach-slapping posturing. Love it.

My virgin recording cut off 60 seconds into it for some reason.

NHK World News. Check the website as well they put the highlights up for each day.

They also have a few days where they show it live so you get the full experience. The ritual before and after the bout and the salt throwing are all great to see.

It’s a separate program so you might have to record that as well.
