I think part of how he did was that he knew that if you multiply something by 72 and then divide it by 25 what you're essentially doing is multiplying the original number by 3, so what he did was get a number close to a third of 952, which was 318 (318 multiplied by 3 is 954). Also, he knew that by subtracting 50 between multiplying by 75 and dividing by 25 he would take 2 off the number once it had been divided by 25 (as 50 divided by 25 is 2), and he knew the number was 954, so he knew it would work out to 952. That explains why he hadn't worked out 318 multiplied by 75 as all he was using was the fact that multiplying by 75 and dividing by 25 was like multiplying by 3. Although I have no idea how he worked all this out in 30 seconds
