Yeah, so literally after a sleepless night and no doubt a **** day at work tomorrow I've figured out what clue 2 was getting at.

You may have noticed that logic isn't my strong point

BUT!!! Pedantry IS my strong point, so here are a few questions for the logic monkeys:

    1) What kind of house has only 1 next door neighbour, the end house, which her house clearly isn't. I mean what kind of town planner starts the street numbers at number 11 or number 13? It is possible that this lady's house is the end of the street rather than the beginning.

    2) Streets in the UK generally don't have a number 13 (as her neighbours is purported to be) as it is considered unlucky and some idiots won't live there. Therefore the number 13 is generally avoided as the house price is affected.

    What say you?........

And what the hell is a "perfect statistician". Is this opposed to an imperfect statistician?

If it's a street with no number 13, then it would be the 9-4-1 combination.
That would also have some logic to the third question as if she lives on 12 the number 10 would give the 4-3-3 combination but then since she was reluctant to have a second child the 9-4-1 combination works.

I found a slightly different version of the riddle (link):

A census taker asked a housewife how many people lived in her house and what their ages were. The woman told him that three daughters lived in the house, that the product of their ages was 36, and that the sum of their ages was the number of the house next door. The census taker went next door and looked at the number on the door. When he came back, he told the housewife that the information she had given was insufficient, whereupon she replied, "My oldest daughter is sleeping upstairs." The census taker thanked her and promptly figured out the daughters' ages. What were they and how did he know?

The woman had a 9-year-old daughter and 2-year-old twins. Since the census taker knew both the product and the sum of their ages, confusion could only arise if two or more sets of ages led to the same product and sum. Breaking 36 into three factors, only two sets of ages (9,2,2, and 6,6,1) lead to the same sum of 13. The womans final piece of information told the census taker that there was only one oldest daughter, not two.
Oh, and I grew up in a house #13 btw.

So many clever *******s here that maybe you can solve this for me.

          Three men in a restaurant.
          Bill comes to £25.00
They each put in a £10.00 note and give the money to the waiter.

He comes back with the change, £5.00. (From the £30.00 they gave him)

He gives them each back £1.00, making £.00 in total and they tell him to keep the other £2.00 as a tip.

          So...in summary.
          Bill 25.00
Each give £10.00 and get £1.00 back so each have spent £9.00.
          Waiter has £2.00.

          Now, 3 x £9.00 = £27.00
Plus the £2.00 the waiter has = £29.00

          Where is the other £1.00?

            Very good but 25 / 3 is not 9
"Through me the way into the suffering city,
Through me the way to the eternal pain,
Through me the way that runs among the lost.

            My maker was divine authority,
The highest wisdom, and the primal love.
Before me nothing but eternal things were made,
            And I endure eternally.
Abandon every hope, ye who enter here."

I know Mr Reaper...But. Whatever way you look at it there is one clear fact. The three men have each spent £9.00!

Would you like me to explain it and spoil a good thread?

Not bloody likely! But I gather it's all in the wording. Let's leave it at that!

I used it a lot in youth work using real coins so it demonstrated to them that nothing was hidden. It is a beaut tho, eh?

they did each pay $9 but that covers the $25 bill and the $2 tip.
                          Perhaps you should say:
                          3x9=27
                          + 3(the change)=30.

                          You're welcome.
