Ha, I used to do something similar to my dog. In the park by us there is a long skinny pond, I'd stand at one side, in the middle and chuck a ball about 5 yards to to the other side. Our Eddie then has to run 20 yards that way and then 20 yards back just to get to the opposite side and then another 40 yards to bring the ball back to me. Sounds cruel but he loves it.

Dogs are ace. Love them. No such thing as a bad dog, only a bad owner.

He knew that by landing on it from the left it would stand more chance of getting the correct forward trajectory and that he needed momentum as he jumped. Going round the other way would've impaired his ability to do this.
