and they say footballers are stupid

    Monday November 10, 2008

A footballer's apparent dedication of a goal to a fellow player who was jailed for killing two boys while driving drunk has provoked anger.

Ipswich midfielder David Norris made a handcuffed wrists gesture to goalkeeper Luke McCormick after scoring the winning goal against Blackpool on Saturday.

McCormick is serving seven years over the deaths of 10-year-old Arron Peak and his eight-year-old brother Ben.

The brothers, from Partington in Manchester, were killed when McCormick's black 4x4 ploughed into their car at 100mph on the M6 in Staffordshire on June 7.

Experts said the goalkeeper was "at best semi-conscious" after drinking all night.

The 25-year-old, a former England youth international, pleaded guilty to causing their deaths by dangerous driving and to drink driving.

Earlier this year, Premier League star Tim Cahill apologised for a 'handcuffs' goal celebration aimed at his brother who is in jail for a vicious attack.

The Everton midfielder marked his shot against Portsmouth in March by pretending his wrists were chained.

After the weekend match, Norris defended his own gesture.

"It wasn't a handcuff sign, it was a private message, but I can see how people might have seen it like that and I apologise wholeheartedly if it has caused any offence," he said.

"Luke is a good friend of mine and I have told him I will visit him in prison, but he made a massive mistake and he is rightly paying the price for it."

However, Amanda Peak, the mother of the two dead boys, told the Daily Mirror that she was "disgusted" with Norris.

"To celebrate a goal like that is disrespectful to me and my husband and my boys. He should be given a ban by his club," she said.

"Norris is doing this in front of thousands of supporters, including children, and sending out the wrong message that we can drink and drive and it's okay to kill someone."

I'm sure he could have thought of a more appropriate private message than that.
Idiot, should donate his match fee and bonuses to the family WITH an apology

I didn't see the thread initially. Nothing will comfort the family but I think he should give them an apology

I think the guy is disgusting & the FA/FL should ban him for a very long time, it was pre-determined & thoughtless beyond belief. His club should also be making a statement to condem his actions

There's not much they can do about a goal celebration. 2 weeks wages probably.

I know Ipswich's hand are tied by lawyers, etc; but tell him he won't be considered in the 1st team for a period of time, as well as a two week fine minimum

If J Ross can get a 12-week fine from his employer why not a footballer.

A footballer has been criticised for a "handcuffs" goal celebration apparently in support of a jailed drink-driver.

Ipswich Town midfielder David Norris crossed his wrists, an apparent message for former team-mate Luke McCormick.

Ex-Plymouth goalkeeper McCormick was jailed for seven years for causing the deaths of Aaron Peak, 10, and Ben Peak, 8, after drinking at Norris's wedding.

The boys' mother Amanda, of Partington, Greater Manchester, said: "You don't do things like that."

She said Ipswich should consider reprimanding the midfielder.

The FA said it was seeking an explanation from David Norris

"Fair enough, you're going to show your support, go to prison to see him, write him letters, make phone calls to him, but don't do things like that.

"We're trying hard not to hate Luke McCormick at the moment, but people like David Norris are making it very difficult to do that."

McCormick was twice the drink-drive limit when he crashed into a car carrying the youngsters on the M6 in Staffordshire on 7 June.

Norris, 26, was celebrating scoring Ipswich's winning goal against Blackpool on Saturday when he made the gesture.

A Football Association spokesman said: "We are aware of the incident and have written to Ipswich to seek an explanation from David Norris for his actions and await his response."

Now he's denying making a handcuff gesture.

Here's a link, what do you think?
