Should be fun to see Beckham play in DC in August when it's 90 degress with humiditiy also 90%. He will be a non factor. The heat will kill him.

I think he made a great move for his career not as a footballer, but as a global brand. This is partially possible because of the MLS finally signing a TV contract with ESPN where ESPN is paying to show the matches. I think this deal just got a lot more valuable for ESPN and that is GREAT news for football in the USA. If we can start getting serious match coverage on sports media here, with Beckham's inevitable mug leading the way, I think the game could really grow here. For this alone, he's worth the money. That said, I hate the Galaxy (DC United for me, always) and I don't think he'll make much of a difference on the pitch.

Also, if he's getting £500K a week, I hope this opens the eyes of legitimate footballers that this is a market to come play in and maybe we can help grow the game in this country with real players in the future.

Finally, the Clint Dempseys of the world must be PISSED. After fighting the MLS for years to get a decent wage and having it be thrown in their faces how the league can't afford a decent player salary, this will sting. I hope the players go after Becks big time; He now represents a ridiculous imbalance in the wage structure in the league. Time for a legit player's association IMO.

It's the biggest contract in all of professional sports!

Put's how much he is earning into some kind of perspective.

The previous biggest was $252 million over 10 years for baseball player Alex Rodreguiz [sp?]

Does one not follow the other? No Beckham the footballer then no Backham 'global brand'.

What possible interest would there be in Beckham the former footballer aside from the odd splash in Heat and OK! magazines.

I actually feel sorry for the people of L.A. Not even Jack Bauer can save them from the Beckhams...

Me and my old man were working when this came on the radio.

My dad said "£25m over 5 years for that useless ****".

Then he heard what he was actually getting paid.

The man's a ****ing genius. Nowhere near one of the world's top footballers yet he's the richest by far. And then he gets the most lucrative sports contract ever when he's 31 and can't even make the ****e England team. Genius. I wish I was his agent.

Gotta give Posh credit, she's played a part.

Say what you want about her but she's also made herself a major player with virtually no talent at all. Beckham is overrated but at least he was a pretty good footballer.

I bet he'll play for 2 seasons, get injured then get moved to management. Moreover, he'll concentrate on his soccer acadmys in Ca.

beckham will never in his life go in to management, he hasn't got the brains for it...

I'm always amazed at people saying Becks is stupid. He may not be very smart on some things, but he sure knows how to sell himself and laugh all the way to the bank. I wouldn't mind a bit of that "stupidity".

                                OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
                                Just seen the SSN interviews:
That CNUT has started calling Association Football "Soccer". WHAT A CNUT! I thought I couldn't hate the man an more than when he played for SCUM and lost England the 1998 World Cup*, but this latest turn of events has made my blood boil.
I REALLY hope he fails, I hope his career takes a mssive downturn and he fades into obscurity. To disrespect the game like that, purely for financial purposes makes me want to vomit.
Hope he puts all his money into these soccer academies and I hope they fail miserably.

                                * well we would have won if he hadn't been sent off
