I was at the Italy – Wales match a few years ago and the behavior of the Italian fans inside and outside the ground was a disgrace.

It’s obvious that hooliganism is widespread in Italian football at all levels. And it seems that the Italian FA has not tried hard enough to tackle the problem and it’s culminated in the death of this poor policeman.

Uefa should sort this problem out ASAP.

According to reports another policeman is in a critical condition, hope he recovers.

This is horrendous and my heart goes out to the family and friends of the policeman.

I also feel really sorry for the ordinary football fans who will all be tarred with the same brush now and called animals etc and we know excatly how that feels and how it only adds to the pain of tradegy. Went to the CL Final Juve V Milan and the fans were great, as were all the Milan fans I met in Istanbul.

Hope the Italian FA and police finally have the wake up call they need, but what a price to pay.

Yes it was the authorities who lobbed an explosive charge at the Police officer wasn't it?

There comes a time when you have to make an example of a club. Unfortunately that means the innocent suffer but their suffering in missing the matches doesn't compare to that of the police officer's family.

Extreme violence doesn't happen inside stadiums. Fans are well aware that if they want to have a 'real' fight then it's done away from the ground. The policemen was killed outside the ground.

Clearly not but tollerence of this behaviour let it escalate. Punishing the club means that no attention will be made to other teams with the same problem and then the cycle starts again.

                Shocking, tragic news.

The biggest disgrace is the leniency FIFA have shown to the Italian league. Ban them from CL until they get their house in order.

The violence in Italy surrounding football has been getting steadily worse over the years and sadly, it was always going to end in tragedy. Nothing has ever been done about it. I mean, scooters being taken into games and dropped onto lower tiers - you can't tell me the stewards didn't notice a ****in scooter being taken in!

They took in the scooter in small parts and then fixed it up inside the stadium.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about crowd control and behaviour at grounds, hence the sarcy response

To be fair, they're World Champions and Milan were in THAT CL final so I don't think the football has gone down that much.

Italian football is rotten to the core. Given the violence that has plagued the Italian game for the last decade or so it's unfortunate that an incident like this has to happen before the footballing authoraties take decisive action.

This incident should be the catalyst for the systematic dismantling of the ‘ultra’ groups who, for some unfathomable reason, wield a great deal of power within the Italian game.

Italian players' association president Sergio Campana has called for the suspension of football for up to a year in a bid to tackle hooliganism.

The FIGC announced an immediate suspension of all domestic and international football just hours after a policeman was killed during fighting between Catania and Palermo fans at the Sicilian derby.

Campana said: "FIGC commissioner, Luca Pancalli, called me and I was in total agreement with the suspension.

"But I wanted my proposal taken seriously that soccer should stop for a year in order to reflect on the evils that exist."

The FIGC have not said how long the suspension will remain in place but this weekend's domestic fixtures and both the senior and Under 21 internationals will not be played.

Campana also believes Italy should follow the example set by England in stamping out violence in football and insists a one-game suspension is not enough.

"A one-day postponement is not enough. There have been two deaths in a week in Italian football.

"If in England they've managed to beat every type of violence, I see no reason why we can't do the same.

"In England you see teams that have been relegated and applauded by their fans, here our players are hit because they lose one game.

"The culture must change. This time we can not allow it to go on. It's time to reflect, we can not lose life for absurd reasons."
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.
