The primary reason for this game (before Utd attached any other reason for it) is to 'celebrate' 50 years of the EU. So why the **** a Europe XI vs Manc Utd? And at Old Trafford? By all means a West Europe XI vs East Europe XI or North vs South but involving an individual club who will no doubt think themselves as rather special being chosen for this - or they probably lobbied heavily for it?

This game will benefit charity (fair enough) and Manchester United. I hope Utd get 10 broken legs and our players play no more than 10 minutes.

It's pretty ridiculous - it's also supposed to celebrate ManU being in Europe for 50 years, but I dont know why that needs to be celebrated more than say Real Madrid being in Europe, or AC Milan, who historically are much important clubs in Europe than Man U are. I don't know, if like you suggest, this is just a secondary reason which the Mans have attached to it.

My guess is Man U suggested this game as a way to celebrate their 50 years in Europe, but to make it prestigious and not a total joke, they said it could also be used to celebrate the EU, or perhaps they sold it on the latter just to make it more prestigious.

This is a bull **** game that none of our players should be playing in apart from Zenden.
No Chelsea players playing because they've got a game tomorrow. So have Arsenal. Simple as that.

The game is for charity. Have you ever thought that our players might actually WANT to play in it. These games are always soft anyway. There will be no tackles, it'll finish about 4-4 and Ronaldo will try a different trick every time he gets the ball. Oh, he does that anyway...
Dreams come true. Without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them.

Yes, but could the time not be better spent training with our squad. After all we have a game this weekend also.

I see no benefit that can be derived from this whatsoever.

They'll have trained today. They'll play for 45 minutes tonight. They'll train again tomorrow. We don't play for 5 days.

I've got no problem with it. Except if (when) the Mancs boo our players, that will annoy me.

Yes, bit unedifying that they've tied themselves into this, giving them a false sense of importance.

Dunno if anyone else seen it but Bobby Charlton said the following promoting it:

United legend Sir Bobby Charlton said the match was a "very significant" occasion.

"He added: "The history of Manchester United is tied up with that of Europe. Some of the club's greatest moments have been played out on a European stage."

You what?!! Not likely. "Some of the club's greatest moments have been played out on a European stage." It's taken a while for me to tot it all up, but I've now managed to do it , and the number of "greatest moments" amounts to.........2

I think it should have been East v West as someone suggested.
BUT if it had to be a team that has a relevance and an importance in Europe through it's long history of success on European stage...
                .
well it certainly shouldn't have been Utd, who if anything have represented mediocrity and failure, in an European context.
In situation they're trying to promote, it could only be Madrid, Milan or ourselves.

Utd have been so successful in Europe that we have the trophy they won, on their hugely numbered second win, on display in our trophy room forever?

                How successful is that? Laughable.

Forgot that they had games tomorrow...

As for playing a charity game in the final quarter of the season, well it's madness imo. Play it in August or after the CL final or something.

Indeed, if we're going to have gala matches for two-time European Cup winners then when are the ones for Porto and Notts Forest?

Man U v Europe is a rather poor way to celebrate 50 years of the EU. If this is what really is being celebrated it should be a Europe XI v World XI.

A better way to celebrate Europe coming together would've been to create a mini-tournament in pre-season involving the UEFA 'badge of honour' and 'European Cup owning' giants - and possibly invite some of the top Latin American teams too like Boca Juniors (Give us some tips on our new satdium too), Flamenco, Santos and lucky *******s Sao Paulo and turn it into a genuine 'World Club Cup'.

                            Gerrard and Carragher aren't starting.

LMAO at how they made Man U's European "glory" (er, small handful of trophies, a load of quarter/semi-final appearances) into a montage.

I just switched over and they were 'hinting' at the fact that they haven't really won very much at all have they? I bet Jocky was dying to go 'well, no actually Gabby they haven't, they've won nowhere near FIVE have they' *stands up and thrusts his five fingers in front of the camera*

If Stevie and Carra aren't starting I'll leave it until the second half, when maybe God and Bolo will be on as well....
