who was the last real class english manager...

was thinking about this the other day, as steve maclaren is obviously rubbish. they were in talks with big phil scholari but opted for maclaren instead. (the fool that made that decision should be shot today)...

so my question is who was the last great english coach, it's pretty clear to me that there is no one that has a job at the moment that qualifies. Bobby Robson is the best i can think of in the last one or two decades...

how long is it since an english manager won the league?

I would have to say that of those currently managing, Steve Coppell is the only one I'd have any confidence in to succeed at a higher level than the one he is currently at. I also think Pardew has a lot of potential. But those other candidates (Allardyce, Pearce, Curbishley) do not inspire me at all.

Stuck-up toffee nosed journalists and pundits may say that the top clubs should take the risk of hiring an up and coming young English manager and give him a chance, but how can a top club who need to be doing well domestically and in the CL possibly take a chance on such an uninspiring group of candidates?

Absolutely laughable that people like Curbs and Allardyce were ever linked to the Liverpool job when Houllier was sacked.

I think it would be really interesting to see what Allardyce would do with a team such as Spurs who have decent resources. I rate him quite highly as a manager, but he has never shown any ability to handle the pressure of success and that is one of the hardest skills for a top class manager.

Scolari dropped out because as soon as his name was leaked out, he had the press surrounding his house didn't he? Said that he wasn't willing to live the next few years of his life like that. Respect to him for that, the press are a joke.

he came out during the WC, and said that he had been interested in the job but wanted to wait until after the WC until announcing it. England said no we want to do it now, and he simply stated that he could not go through with it, that it would not be proffessional for him to manage portugal and talk about his next job whilst doing it, and he also stated conficts of intrests if the two would meet in the competition his current and future team. England weren't ready ti wait for 2 weeks, and hired maclaren...

Venebles was decent for a period around Euro '96, actually developed a team ethos.

The English press make me laugh. They really are a complete joke and an endless source of amusment for me, an outsider looking in from across the Irish Sea.

In fairness, how could the English FA expect to attract anyone to this job except those that are up-and-coming. Any established manager wouldnt touch to job, due to the constant hounding by the press etc. It is a nightmare job, with the nightmare created by the press themselves. They have only themselves to blame when a mediocre manager is appointed. Scolari is a case in point.

Furthermore, the fact is that England will still almost certainly qualify for E2008. With four out the five remaining games at home you'd have to fancy them even if they are playing some awful ****.

McClaren, though clearly a middle-of-the-road manager, is relying on his players to at least try to win matches, but they seem not to give a crap at all. For those with the Israel match on tape, watch Owen Hargreaves in the first half. I dont think ive ever seen anyone try less in a match at any level. .

The cancer that is Englands international team seems to stem from the players, not the manager. Unfortunately, Im not sure if McClaren has the cohones to accept this fact and drop a few big names. Even if he did, the press would probably slate him for that too....

The trouble is that he dropped a big name - Beckham - and it was the wrong decision and a pure publicity stunt. In what world are either Jermaine Jenas or Phil Neville a better option than him? Now he has tried it once he will certainly not do it again.

We need a manager who has a firm philosophy of what he wants to do with the team. No matter what merits he may have McLaren has never been that sort of manager.

Yes I forgot about that. I guess McClaren is doomed, and will fall on his own sword eventually.

Hopefully soon, it would be worthwhile for Andorra to beat England if that were the outcome!
