The Press were going to carve him up if he had answered their questions. He would have had to sit there and take it and whatever he said would have been reported in the worst possible light.
Now at least everyone knows he hasn't said anything about it and it makes it look like the Press have simply got a vendetta against him.
I think it will backfire but maybe it's more calculated than it appears.
Then again, with it being the deluded, overpromoted McClown (good one, captain fog), he probably just mistook rudeness for passion and huffiness for pride.
