    Zambian tragedy

    Twelve fans have been killed and 46 injured in a crush at Zambia's Chililabombwe stadium on Saturday.

    The stampede occurred as fans headed to the exits following Zambia's 3-0 win over Congo in their Group 11 qualifying match for the African Cup of Nations.

    "Too many fans tried to squeeze through the few exits available," said regional Chief of Police Antoneil Mutenthwa.

    "Twelve people have been killed, nine men and three women. Some fans suffered serious injuries and are in hospital."

    Those with minor injuries were treated and later discharged last night, he added.

    Mutentwa said the cause of the stampede was unclear, though one witness said it had been caused by people rushing to get aboard free transport.


    It is thought none of the travelling contingent from Congo were injured.

    Provincial minister Mwansa Mbulakulima is expected to travel to the region to assess the situation.

    Witnesses said that the crush came as supporters tried to force their way through the limited number of turnstiles in a bid to get home before dark.

    Kick-off at the game had earlier been delayed as officials waited for the stadium to fill up.

              Thanks mate but i also blame the football association and the government because we only have one national stadium which is not fir to host any international matches let alone local cup finals due to its fragile condition. The stadium was built when we got our independence in 1964 and since that tiime it has never been maintained.

              The stadium they played in yesterday offers the same. Bottom line is the football association of zambia dont have the money to biuld a new stadium and nor does the government has any plans os some sort of funding put in place to build a stadium.

                Condolences to the victims and their families; A horrible tragedy.

                That said, this is where FIFA could do some serious good; For all of their talk about expanding the global game, how about investing in stadiums and facilities around the world and getting them up to FIFA standards? Instead of having Blatter fly around the world glad handing FA's and posing with impoverished children, why not enhance a campaign to improve footballing infrastructure in nations like Zambia to allow supporters adequate conditions? I am sure there will be talk of corruption, etc, but this type of thing must stop and FIFA could, in my opinion, lead the way in the fight to standardize grounds and procedures for footballing nations everywhere.

                  Totally agree with you mate our main stadium which is now closed its total capacity is around 25,000 only and the stadium which hosted yesterdays game capacity is around 18,000.

                  I agree with you that corruption is rife with the local FA and its everywherein any other African country. No accountability whatsoever.

                  If FIFA can pledge and work with the goverments in African countries to help build at least one stadium that would be a great idea. The stadium does not need to be 70000/80000 capacity, half of that would be good enough.

                  FIFA makes millions and millions i wonder where that money goes. Anyway lets see in the coming days what the Zambian govenment/FIFA say about this tragedy as it is not the first time it has happend in an African country.

                            Condolences to all those touched by this tragedy.

                            Out of interest was it Zambia that lost the whole team in a plane crash (might have been in the nineties)? i can vaguely remember something like that happening to an african nation.
