    Inside Sport - Graham Poll

Did anyone catch this on BBC One last night?

Really good insight into the thoughts and viewpoint of Poll and referees in general, i thought.

He came across well IMO, genuine and seemed like a nice enough bloke.

Yes, he has tendencies to seem arrogant at times, but as he himself explained, that can sometimes be the by product of being insecure - the 'arrogance' acts as a shield.

I personally felt sorry for him and he made an excellent point about the footballing authorities needing to support and protect refs far more than they do. As Poll mentioned, he always had proper security and police escorts, but this doesnt happen at lower levels and on the parks every sunday morning.

If others start feeling like Poll and jacking it in, there'll be no more refs coming through and without them, the game will die.

    Thoughts?

Yeah I also thought he seemed like a decent bloke. Didn't see it all though.

I think Poll is a nice enough guy but I think that the last thing a referee can afford to be is insecure. It would explain some of his apparent posturing on the pitch.

I guess part of the problem is that the FA is not strong enough in it's defence of referees. managers are allowed to say pretty much what they want even when they have no factual backing.

I think possibly fans take a lot of the blame for the standard of referee we get. So much abuse is doled out that the quality selected for is ability to take flak rather than necessarily the best decision makers.

rafa also complained about it. cause in spain managers are not allowed to speak to the ref during a match (halftime) nor are they allowed speaking about them in the press, and refs aren't allowed to talk to the press as well, if i remember. and he was talking about the ref isn't as big as he is made out to be in the uk, or something...

I thought it was a pretty intriguing insight, actually. I wanted to hate it, the idea of a 'celebrity ref', but all it was was an honest account/video diary of a season in the life of a ref.

I reckon the FA ****ed him over and it's a shame he feels he's had to jack it in. He seems a good man, if a little soft . Although I've often criticised some of his decisions, and I've howled my derision at him from the stands, I've always known he was making honest mistakes. I've never believed he has/had an agenda and I never believed he was an attention-seeker. He just got some decisions wrong, as all refs do.

Moving on....what do people reckon Mourinho said to him? I think it's pretty obvious.

"Are you ****ing Sir Alex up the arse?"

Or words to that effect. No doubt!

If Mourinho said that then he really needs to be brought to book over it by the FA. Shameful comments. I dont think there is any other manager in the game who would use that kind of language, whether to the ref or otherwise.

                    really enjoyed this show

he was right to send off the bluescum player for calling him a ****ing cheat.

i wonder what john terry said, to get sent off. i reckon it was pretty bad near racist the way even some of his own players acted.

I didn't see the interview but I read something in the papers the other day about how ridiculous it is for Poll to think Barwick should have overridden the established disciplinary process and got involved by publicly supporting him.

I don't think he was a cheat but he was pretty incompetent, especially under pressure.

Oh yeah, as for sending off the Evertonian (was it McFadden?) for calling him a cheat, the player said he called him "****ing ****e" not a "****ing cheat". That would not normally be cause for sending a player off, or even booking him.

It seems perfectly possible that Poll, with his vain ego bruised and his persecution complex in the light of the Chelsea game, misheard and cast himself as the wronged hero of the piece.

I'll try to dig out the article - it may be worth a read if you've seen Poll's interview.
