The fishing comparison is clearly daft as it is in no way a viable mainstream watching attraction, neither is it in any other countries. Both of which football is.Originally posted by spud_gun View PostMore people in the UK go fishing of a weekend than play football.
4th choice? I think you'll find that MLS is some way behind NFL, MLB, NBA NASCAR, college football and college basketball, NHL and quite possibly Tractor racing in terms of populatiry in America.
Have a quick look at ESPN or FOXSports websites to see exactly how much coverage 'soccer' gets in the US. Or indeed you could watch ESPN or ESPN2.
You have to build though surely. The fact is that Beckham has generated significant sponsorship, bums on seats and column inches with his move. The idea that Beckham will go over there and it will become as dominant as it is in Europe is clearly a fantasy but there is a market and it will probably generate significant income.
It all depends on how you want to judge the success of football in America but I think that it will grow over the next 20 years and that Beckham could potentially have a significant role in that.
[I'm not convinced that you can argue that college and NBS basketball are different sports by the way. Surely given the franchise system this is like splitting different league levels in football here?]"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

To be fair, the Auxerre v Liverpool match wasn't so hot either... LA Galaxy are a poor team. It was nice to have so much excitement for an exhibition match, but how many will return for the Toronto FC match in two weeks?
Off to the Red Bulls v DC United match tomorrow... a fun day in the sun, I hope."Our legacy begets an excellence that surpasses the particulars of who produces it." -- David Carr

quality of the football is always going to be poor preseason, i meant the coverage and celebrity sightings and the reaction of the crowd to beckhams every breath was a bit sad. it is nice to see a full stadium at an american game, i wonder how many times i'll see it againOriginally posted by BrooklynRed View PostTo be fair, the Auxerre v Liverpool match wasn't so hot either... The match coverage itself was atrocious, agreed. The cut-aways to Beckham tying his shoe, then untying his shoe, his wife with Katie Holmes and Eva Longoria, to Arnold Schwarzeneger for a 2 minute interview while the ball was in play, etc; Just atrocious. I couldn't agree more about that mate; Americans have no idea how to televise football. Poor announcers, no idea how to tell a story, no discussion of the nuance or business of the game. They even had a "Shot Speed" graphic on a Shaun Wright-Phillips attempt on goal (53 miles per hour- DEADLY! *sigh*)... like it's his fastball or something.Originally posted by Ron_Mexico View Postquality of the football is always going to be poor preseason, i meant the coverage and celebrity sightings and the reaction of the crowd to beckhams every breath was a bit sad. it is nice to see a full stadium at an american game, i wonder how many times i'll see it again

To be honest, I don't see that aspect getting any better. What I hope does get better is the quality of play and the intensity of rivalries and player personalities outside of Beckham to keep people interested.
The game today; I have been to many Red Bulls games, and the DC United games are sort of a derby for MLS; A pretty intense rivalry and regionally close enough that away fans travel, are separated in the stadium (which will be 80% empty because the Red Bulls play in an 81,000 seat NFL stadium), etc. They don't like each other, which makes the game interesting. Juan Pablo Angel is slated to play (he's been brilliant, scoring against Celtic midweek in the 'All-Star Game') as is Jozie Altidore, who played very well in U-20 World Cup. DC United is older, has a lot of titles, cagey."Our legacy begets an excellence that surpasses the particulars of who produces it." -- David Carr
