That would be Van Basten. IMO

I would think it's between the following for greatest 'number 9' ever:

      van Basten
      Ronaldo
      Gerd Muller
      Puskas?

There's too many different types of forwards/Strikers out there to argue.

Ronaldo was sheer brilliance running at pace with power, skill and grace.

And Pele? (even though he wore the 10 jersey, his role was an english No.9)

Although I never saw him play, to my mind Pele was much more than just a number 9, dropping into midfield as he did. I would never class Pele as a number 9. More of a general forward/inside left...no?

Can we have a thread just for Shaggys thoughts on Rooney?

              HILARIOUS!

I only caught the end of him in real time, but from highlights and replays I think pele could play number 5 and still look the best player on the pitch. But IMO worthy of consideration in the role of a No.9 alongside those names.

                What about Di Stefano?

He never rests does he? I would have thought they would take it easy with him right now and give the guy a break

Barcelona is warming him up so he'll be up for the job when playing against Arsenal on 15th.

Amazing player, the way the ball sticks to his feet and the way he changes pace without even thinking about it, as well as his clinical finishing and great vision make him a complete player. And I think at the minute he is the best player in the world.

But say in a dream world he moved to Liverpool and replaced Kuyt on our right wing, I don't think he would be effective as he is in La Liga, I think he would still show traces of the amazing player he is, for example the odd mazing run. But I think the physical battles would be to much for him, I have no idea why but I can just see him getting pushed off the ball to easily. Also bar Arsenal he wouldn't get the passing he thrives upon in Barca in the Premier League.

I may very well be wrong, and I'd take him in my dream team any day of the week. And him Torres Gerrard and Cole is a mouthwatering prospect, I just can't help but think he would not be as effective.

someone prove me wrong please, I'm not an avid watcher of Spanish football but from what I have seen of him has been amazing.

I think Zizou might just be half a head better than him at the minute as well. Probably not after next season.
