If Anelka does well for Chelsea...

Will we have lots of people regreting that we never signed him a few years ago after he was here on loan?

I didnt see a lot of him when he was with us but he does appear to have a decent record for goalscoring on a consistent basis.

To that point - what was the final reason we never signed him after the loan deal ended?

It was straight choice between Anelka and Diouf. They both cost about the same.

So Houllier spent 10 million on Diouf

Oh and we also had the chance to sign Samuel Etoo for £8m but we decided not to

And the chance to sign C.Ronaldo for £9m, but as we wondered if we could affrd it, the Mancs came in, the required price was bumped up by Lisbon, and that was that.

He couldn't get a working permit if I remember things right.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

At the time though we appeared to have some decent striking options and needed someone more creative. With hindsight it is all easy to say what was the right decision was (especially as Anelka has become increasingly able in the creative department as he has matured) but I can still see the logic in going for Diouf even if it didn't work out.

The rumours doing the rounds at the time where that he had been seen out on the town when he should have been tucked up in bed............... not off his head pissed or anything just socialising with his brothers who were Dj's in the city.......... not serious but breaking the clubs curfew none the less.

Gh was supposed to be of the opinion that if he was like that while on loan what would he be like with a 3 yr contract under his belt.

Rick Parry is also on record as saying "that Nic was a smashing lad but his brothers ( who were his agents) were a nightmare to deal with"

GH also preffered diouf................... possibly the worst bit of judgement ever
Lawrenson:"Well thats 3 good chances they have had in the first 3 minutes of this half"

Motson:"" Yes Mark, you could almost say that they have had 3 chances in as many minutes"

Lawrenson: Errr I thought I just did say that, John"
