Supposed to be announced tomorrow, and the rumour is that it'll actually be Trapattoni.

That really has come out of the left field if true.

What age is Trapattoni now? He's really pushing on isn't he?
A humble guy with healthy desire.

          69 on Paddy's day.

He worked with Brady at Juve, so it's likely Brady could be his assistant. I really hope it's him rather than Veneables anyway. He's a proven winner, despite his age.

            Staunton on Trapattoni

Former Ireland manager Steve Staunton believes Italian Giovanni Trapattoni would provide quite a contrast if appointed as his successor.

Trapattoni has emerged as the favourite for the national team post vacated by Staunton last October after a poor Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

The Football Association of Ireland are thought to be nearing a decision with a board meeting called for Sunday evening and a statement promised.

Trapattoni, who is currently in charge of Austrian club Salzburg, would bring a wealth of experience having coached Italy, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Fiorentina, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Benfica.

Yet Staunton believes important questions of his credentials would still need to be asked before an appointment could be made.

The ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa defender said: "What's his knowledge of the Irish players? How well does he know how the Irish players feel and what they're all about because I think we are a little bit different."
Well, here we are in a room with two manky hookers and a racist dwarf. I think I'm heading home.

Said last night that they hadn't even talked to him yet and said on SSN webby that he 'laughed off the suggestion'. Strange.

God only knows who they're gonna pick. There have been so many "nailed on" candidates that I don't think anybody knows.

btw, why "bollox if true" if it is Trapattoni?

                    Presumably cause he'll lose money.

It's very strange alright. Trapattoni had denied being interested a week or two ago, but the rumours are still going on...

Yeah, mainly about the money but I'm not a big fan of a 'foreigner' coming in at all really. a foreigner being one from a totally different culture not knowing anything about our style of footy etc. I suppose Engerland could have the same problem but you never know.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they announce someone from completely under the radar though.

Most people linked are out of the game, and most aren't Irish. At least Trapattoni is in the game, has won titles, and has a good link to the Irish set-up in Brady as a friend.

But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if someone came out of left field. It's defo the sort of market to stay away from, unless you're laying. Which you could have made a fortune off on this one.

                          Left of field candidate?

                          Eamon Dunphy anyone?

They don't come anymore left of field than that.

I would love to see the Dunph in charge if only for the comedy value.

He can't do any worse than the previous incumbents and we all know that his fondness for a good night out would aid team building exercises. He's not afraid to make difficulut decisions (and then change his mind ten minutes later), he'd have John O' Shea out on his ear, he's Irish and he has the air of a rabid dog.

                          The perfect candidate.
