Denis O'Brien is picking up half the cost of the management team
Only in Ireland. Pathetic that they ahd to scrounge money from the public. I know they didn't ask him but they admitted on the news tonight that without that investment, they were shopping in a cheaper market. Disgraceful. No wonder we've been such a mess for the past I don't know how long. Bunch of scroungy idiots running our football
but then that's no breaking news.

Dunno. He could have just been hedging his bets like you were.
He hasn't replied to my txt yet - he's probably pissed in a gutter somewhere.

€150 on a hedge, he must be a very well off man

            Couldn't disagree more.
We're not a super power in terms of National team, League or anything else. How do you expect us to get money to get a top coach?
If Trapattoni didn't happen we'd probably still have needed the money to get Venables/Houllier.
If it wasn't either of them, we probably could have got by without donations and brought in Billy Davies, or Liam Brady or someone who'd have nowhere near the pedigree of Trap.
            How is that disgraceful?
And, what about the money the FAI get from the Government?
How about the GAA getting money from the Government? or McManus giving money to Limerick GAA?
Well, here we are in a room with two manky hookers and a racist dwarf. I think I'm heading home.

I don't know what goes on behind the scenes at the FAI or about the finances but you would think a country like us with the cost of everything here and our taxes and **** should have enough money to get someone in of a higher calibre than Billy Davies! Government donations are fine, in fact it's they who SHOULD be donating the quan. It's the fact someone from the public had to donate that irks me. The government are cunts.

You say we're not a super power in terms of national team. You're right, we're not, but we should be. What ever happened to the funds and plans for our new stadium? 2020 now I hear! Sham IMO.

You probably know more about it than me though as I'm not looking into it too deeply, I'm just saying it how I see it/or read it in the papers so if there are legitimate reasons why we can't get proper funding well so be it but I just can't see why there should be...

Why? It's a tiny island with less than 5 million people on it....how on earth is Ireland expected to be a superpower?

I don't get the stance against taking the money from O'Brien. The guy is loaded, he wants the Irish team to do well, much better idea than wasting a hundred times more in a foreign club. Fair play to him. The FAI got lucky with it, but so what.

The only problem, that was mentioned last night, was that apparently he was "in the loop" before Staunton was sacked. Which is hardly fair, and may have influenced his sacking. I'd also like to know if he would still have given the money if we hadn't gotten Trap or someone of his ilk.

Does no one think that Trappatoni might be yesterdays man? It's not as if he has been poached from a top job and wasn't he a crap Italian national team manager anyway?

Who knows. I guess we'll find out in time.
He did win the league last year, and is joint top this year. Yeah I know, the Austrian league, not quite Seria A or La Liga, but still.

He did also say that he had other offers from clubs, but that he wanted out of club football. He wanted to spend more time with the family (no pun intended ).

Yes - of course that's a worry. But you have to remember that we're talking about the Irish national team. It's hardly the most glamourous, interesting or well paid job in world football, is it? There was 0% chance of the FAI poaching anyone from a top job.

He was definitely the outstanding candidate for the job….I mean, look at the alternatives. While England were courting the likes of Capello and Mourinho, there were coaches in the frame for the Irish job of the ilk of Billy Davies, David O'Leary, El Tel and Graeme Souness. That says it all.

He's not been out of football and is still achieving results in present role, albeit in the Bundesliga.

It's a fair point - I can't think of any obviously superior (and available) candidates.

The underage (schoolboy) football in Ireland is one of the best set ups in the world. The talent is limitless. So the platform is there to be built on. That's why.
