    AFC Wimbledon

I've been having this argument with a mate at work, who has been following Wimbledon since their inception (the original Wimbledon).

If you don't already know, MK Dons recently 'returned' a load of Wimbledon related memorabilia to AFC, including FA Cup related stuff. Essentially this is an admission on their part that they have no Wimbledon heritage (or do they?)

Until now, both clubs - MK Dons, and AFC Wimbledon - have been claiming the cup win of 1988 as their own.

For my money the cup record belongs to MK Dons, as Wimbleon FC became MK Dons.

However he is adamant that the cup record should be with AFC, as that is where all the Wimbledon fans went.

But how can a club win a trophy before it even existed? (AFC were incorporated in 2002)

I've never seen this debate discussed amongst reds before. I know what I think, but I thought perhaps with what is going on here, some might disagree with me, and agree with my Wimbledon mate.
    Really?

I think it belongs to neither. As you say, AFC Wimbledon didn't exist in any form then and for me Wimbledon FC ceased to exist when it moved to Milton Keynes (if not earlier).

Surely there must be quite a few winners from the early days of the FA Cup that don't exist any longer.
    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I'd go with Neil's view here. Although I think it is pretty obvious that on an emotional level the fans of AFC Wimbledon will see it as their victory - irrelevant of the fact that the organisation which won the cup no longer technically exists.

Yeh actually I'm inclined to agree with you two now.

Well...nice to have a debate without a slagging match isn't it?
        Really?

Totally agree, Wimbledon FC were dissolved when MK Dons were formed, they're totally unrelated. Wimbledon FC join the likes of Wanderers F.C.

I agree with Neil. I don't see what sort of case AFC Wimbledon think they have.

I view it as AFC Wimbledon's personally.

The club that we knew as Wimbledon was stolen from its supporters and the FA let it happen. For shame! A very dangerous precedent that.

The fans at Wimbledon, in the face of such betrayal, were forced to restart their club.

They didn't want to. They wanted their club to stay put.

Legal niceties are all well and good, but for me the real new club is MK Dons. There may be a technicality as to the fact it was est'd in 2002 but its the same club in my eyes with the same fans.

Its not their fault that the FA mismanaged the situation and allowed a club to be ripped from their community.

The cup belongs to AFC Wimbledon and they have every right in my eyes to claim it. Who the hell are MK Dons anyway?

He's finally lost it. And what's really weird is that he's never even had it.

What a f*cking great point! In my desire to examine the situation fairly, coolly and analytically I'd totally forgotten about who they beat.

                              I'm convinced. It's ours.
