CLUB STATEMENT REGARDING JERMAINE PENNANT
Contrary to reports in today's media, Birmingham City Football Club has not agreed a fee with Liverpool FC for Jermaine Pennant.

The two clubs have talked on a couple of occasions but Birmingham City and Liverpool Football Club are a long way off in their respective valuations of the player.

Until Birmingham's valuation is met, the Club will not even consider a move for Pennant.

As Birmingham City have continually stated, they are not looking to sell any of their best players

The Liverpool squad head to their Swiss pre-season camp tomorrow, with the Reds preparing a fresh move to bring the 23-year-old winger to Merseyside.

FOR the second successive summer, Rafa Benitez expects to head to Liverpool's pre-season base in Switzerland with at least two spare seats on the flight.

The Liverpool boss hoped to conclude his transfer business before the week's intensive training in Europe, which begins tomorrow.

And although Benitez remains confident some of the new faces he craves may arrive by the end of the week, there are undoubted signs of frustration with the regularity the phrase 'transfer saga' allies itself to many Liverpool deals.

Over a year since the Reds' first pursuit of a right midfielder, the elusive winger is still to be paraded in Liverpool colours.

To be fair I thought we were doing alright in clearing out the deadwood. Kirkland has gone, Cheyrou's gone, Morientes gone, Raven gone, Cisse's gone and Diao's on trial at Charlton. Who else is there to get rid of?

He's a decent player but if he's not good enough for the arse he's not good enough for us. Think we'll sign him though.

By that logic we would never have signed the likes of Beardsley (MAn U reject) for one. Sometimes a player needs the rejection of a big club as a preverbial kick in the ass, but sometimes players take longer to develop than others.
The main point about Pennant compared to Alives is is that JP has prem experience. I mean how many brazilians have actually been a success in the Prem?
I think with Pennant you are taking much less of a risk, at best he could develop in to a really, really good winger for us, at worst we will get a good squad player that, if it doesn't work out for him we could probably sell on at a minimal loss.
By comparison Alives is a much bigger gamble, just look at the Cissie scenario to see what the future could hold. We could easily lose half or more of what we have to pay for Alives, not to mention the wages, etc we will be paying him.
