I suppose so, while they are at it why don't they let substituted players run back on and rejoin the game if they feel like it.

Also they should let attackers just stand on the goal line whenever they feel like it.

        Ridiculous decision for the goal,
but trust UEFA (and various other refs etc) to excuse a bad decision away through inconsistencies in the rules..
I suppose if they keep repeating it as much as possible, people will believe them.........until the next similar incident which results in a goal being ruled offside..

BBC Sport Player Rater man of the match: Netherlands' Wesley Sneijder 8.53 (on 90 minutes).

Well if thems the rules thems the rules! And it does state that in the rule book. Stupid I know but there ya go. Players are not supposed to be 'allowed' to leave the pitch without permission or some shizzle...

Truth is, UEFA's only defence is an old chestnut regarding players who leave the pitch are treated as being on the touchline..
Unfortunately, current offside law is determined mainly by judgements not black and white decisions (phase of play, non-interference etc)

No-one can say that the defender was in direct play or could do anything lying on his back 5 yards from the touchline..........in much the same was as you have forwards 20 yards from play deemed as not interfering with play when their teamates run past them through an offside trap, surely a defender knocked down 5 yards from play, on his back off the pitch, should be treated the same ? Its all down to judgement calls..
It wasn't even a case of the defender trying to get back on the pitch as he hadn't even got up when RVN scored..

People can argue that the offside rules encourages attacking sides, but all I think we've seen since the changes has been confusion, inconsistency and doubt............more so than ever over the last season or so..
If it was possible, I would wager that 5 times out of 10, different linesmen would have ruled out that goal, with no defensive explanations from UEFA..

I wouldn't be too shocked to see the Romanians going through so! The Italian defense was absolutely shocking last night. Maybe Cannavaro will retire and the Irish will top the WC group!
