It was £8mil plus Nunez actually and Rafa really had no choice as we had zero money and the end of the window was looming.
    - well said, i don't like the way people are so quick to bash michael owen. At a time when liverpool were ****ing ****e he was our one hope! - He won us cups, he won us big games. He has been unlucky with injuries. The only thing i would criticise him for would be that he but himself and his country before Liverpool - which is his own decision at the end of the day. He was always a good pro and yet gets lambasted by some people like he is el hadji diouf!

      Utterly bonkers.

There is no way he he as anywhere as bad as you say he is. I bet you worshipped him when he was at LFC.

OK, he has acted the tit since he left (and some might say he deserves his fate), but his ability is surely undoubted by most sane people.

Edit: just seen the contradiction in your posts.

'Great goalscorer' you say. 'Never that good' and 'average' you also say. Make your mind up.
      Oh I don't know.

Meaning that he was only a goalscorer, nothing more. Read between the lines.

Not fit to clean Robbie's boots when it came to goalscoring prowess.

Spot on, think what he did for us.
Yes he has been turned by the money, but so have most footballers these days, just let him get on with what he wants to do. Those of you who want to continually dig him must be upset by him, as you dont persecute the likes of baros, cisse and heskey the same way.

              ah well...ANOTHER owen thread....

let's call it how it is guys.....the following points are true:

              1. he WAS a class act for us. Scored some great goals and won some games single-handedly... i particularly remember that hat-trick away to newcastle...
              2. he ****ed us over with his contract negociations and when he came out and said "don't worry i wont leave anfield on a free" he was taking the piss because he really ****ed us over by leaving for 8m. the loyal thing to do would have been to sign a one or two year extension, give it one more season with rafa as boss, and then have an agreement in place that if he wants to leave, that liverpool will sell him for, say 15m or 17m - something like that....
              3. he really wanted to rejoin us when he left madrid... he came out and even said that liverpool would be his first choice but that he'd go to newcastle if liverpool didnt have an offer accepted. I like the way we didnt bend over and simply pay 16m....i think we went as far as 12m which was loads for a guy we sold for 8m a year earlier. If owen had any balls, he'd have stuck to his guns and stayed at madrid until january and then become a red again for 10 or 12m..... how newcastle fans like him is beyond me (probably just cos shearer always talks him up and we all know that everyone from newcastle are thick as ****e anyway...)
              4. he is delusional if he thinks a big four team would buy him now... they would probably take him on a free alright but i don't think he'd be a week-inweek-out starter at any of the big 4 to be honest.....(although i can for some strange reason see him sitting on the UTD bench next season)...... the biggest team he could possibly go to and play every week are spurs...and if newcastle could get their **** together, they'd probably be bigger than spurs anyway.....
              5. if he does move on again, then he is a money grabbing cunt because he really does owe newcastle in my opinion....
              6. i don't think he'd get into our team.... would be a good option for the bench instead of voronin though!!! When torres played a blinder at home to newcastle last season, that showed micheal owen what a complete striker plays like.....

Of course he upset us, he made us believe he was a career Red, then a whistle his way from Spain and he was off, after stalling on a contract for ages, makes me wonder if he and Madrid had a pre-standing arrangement.

I'm not ashamed to say i loved him as a Liverpool player, he gave me some great moments in my football viewing life so far, no doubt there.

But i do think he's a bit one-dimensional for today's game, his pace is not as it was, but in his defence he's not played regular enough to judge what stage he's at, or how good he is at present as regards the Prem.

Anyway i think this thread was more about the stalling on a contract thing, he'll be looking to pick up a pretty penny if leaves Newcastle on a free.

Apart from scoring loads of goals, which he did, what else would you have expected him to do?
                  Oh I don't know.

Owen was and is a rather one dimensional player. He had pace to spare and was rather good finisher but not brilliant. Without that blistering pace he is an above average Prem player but like most say he is not top 4 material, and is only an England player still because of the dearth of good forwards

Although I love Robbie, the stats would disagree with that statement also Robbie never did it at international level when Owen has and still will. I for one would like to Owen do well not back at liverpool maybe but somewhere, maybe Bristol city!!

Maybe he's still an england player due to the 40 goals in 89 games and being the top goalscorer ever in competitive matches!

I would argue that his goals to games ratio is still astounding though (don't have the stats admitedly). That would make him better than average. The only thing is, he doesn't play enough.
                                Oh I don't know.
