The worst thing ever for me on holiday is getting settle in and hearing a load English (or Scottish (potentially worse!!!)) accent. Of course you get the same idiots from the locals or different euro nationals but then ignorance is bliss.

Yeah it is always somehow worse when they are from your own country and worse still if it is someone you know or that knows someone you know

Remind me at some point to pick your brain and that of Exiled Red (I think) for local knowledge as both of you are from Edinburgh (again I think).

I might be there, health willing and feeling better than I have the past week or so, later in the year so possibly will be looking for names of a few places to go to.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Of course mate - no problem at all. Let me know. So many directions a night out in Edinburgh can take you!

Ahh maybe Rudedog is who I was thinking of. It was someone who briefly discussed public transport in Edinburgh some time back in one thread or another. Actually might have been the cost of living thread.

Edit: just looked and it was indeed Exiled Red.

Three of you Burgh boys in here, your numbers are growing

But yes if he went there and it turned into a fish out of water move then that would be comedy gold.

Him wanting UK food would not be a big problem though. When I lived in Germany a couple decades ago now, there were shops around Stuttgart that had Heinz baked beans, Kellogs Corn Flakes and what not for the ex pats that moved to Germany and needed to find an Irish bar to hang out in and the same food as what they got "back home".

Which I always thought was madness, similar to going to Spain or Portugal on holiday and only going to ex pat bars.

Buckfast? Just what sort of tramp do you think I am?

              Actually don't answer that!

Yeah happy to help if I can, but with a young child my personal experience of nights out is probably a bit outdated
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Probably be looking for a few names for things like good rock bars (could be for live music or just playing recorded stuff), nice places to eat (from cheap chippers to somewhere upscale), places worth seeing in the city centre from a historic pov, places that are nice for two friends to stroll around and have a yack, nice shopping areas or nice stand alone out of the way shops (non chain clothes shops and shops that still little oddities).

Basically want to have a mosey around Edinburgh but not totally as a tourist as most cities are at their best when you move away from the tourist stuff and just go where the locals go.

Will start a little thread when I need to ask though, that way locals (and people who have spent time there) can chip in and it might be a handy little guide for other folk thinking of going there or that are looking for ideas of somewhere to visit.

I have actually been to Edinburgh before, but that was a long time ago and am sure that it has changed a bit in the over 20 years since I was there. Just have a little list of places to see, some new to me some I have been before and a similar list of some things I want to do that I need to get a wriggle on and actually start to get through rather than just adding things to that list and not doing them

If I wanted a **** sports bar full of hen and stag dos then I could just stay in Ireland and go up to Templebar.

A few years ago, we were bumped from a campsite we had booked with Canvas in Lake Garda to the suppopsedly bigger and better Bella Italia campsite. WE'd heard about for a few years and people who had gone there seemed to have loved it. Anytime we thought about booking it, it was way more expensive than other sites in the area. But this was a free "upgrade". **** me. A cramped crowded ****hole with 90% Irish occupation on the cloudy swampy side of the lake. Add to that, the first morning there I was walking back from the campsite shop when I heard an "Alright sir!" - two lads that I knew from my school. Live and let live and all that but I don't go on holidays to meet this mother****ers. We subsequently had a good laugh about going on holidays to Italy again together but |I don't think they fully appreciated the deepness of the loathing I felt for them on that first contact as I was already disgusted by the overwhelming presence of my own countrymen and women. I never go to Irish pubs abroad.

I’ve not been there in 15 years easy.

Yep. I meet another Irish person abroad, don't think that because we live on the same rock and have a familar accent that I want to talk to you about things back in Ireland or go with you to the nearby McMurphyfershurefershure pub.

Look at my face, it is showing a look of utter disdain for you. Now **** off and let me enjoy the country I am in and that wonderful feeling that comes with being a stranger in a strange land.

Ha now I want to listen to that song.

Well, that's Spurs ****ed for fourth unless the Aussie fella uncovers gems like he did at Celtic. Different level to make an impact at, though.
