loyalty is a totally overrated concept. surely there is an argument to be made for supporting whatever team play the football that appeals to you most. support spain because they play the best football around at the moment - if they change to dour, hoof-it negtive sledgers then change to a different team. your guiding principle - you're a football fan and therefore support the team which does the most to enhance the game.

I haven't really cared about England since 1998 World Cup, I'm sick of all the hype and crap the press come out with before every game or every tournament.
Also I can't support a team that contains so many players I hate, I was made up when England didn't qualify for Euro 2008, it meant I didn't have to sit through every game of the tournament listening to comments from an England prespective. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I agree with your first point but I don't think that's really the reason many scousers feel little in the way of nationalism. Cultural difference, political marginalisation etc...Originally posted by Norbert Dentressangle View PostThere's always the feeling that Scousers feel they're the only English people that feel non-English. Well, shock horror, but some people from the south feel disenfranchised (sp) from Englerland too. And for exactly the same reasons, ie not wanting to be associated with certain playersLike blood on iron

Did anybody see the Scottish fans Boo "God save the Queen" while Northern Ireland sang their "National anthem".
The Irony.
47 % of Norn Iron Fans actually support the "Replubic" because they are Catholic.
Catholics are not welcome at "Winsor Park"
And most "Proud Prods" don`t realize that unless the Tories need their parliamentary votes that most brits would like to see the end of any British relationship with those Paddies.
I ve lived abroad with Prods who were good friends who accepted they were Irish because it was too much work to explain and they realised that it was an uphill struggle to explain their case.
The short version is if your pro Brit Norn Irish then the Scots will drown you out.
The only reason Norn ireland is still British is because Maggie needed the Unionist vote to keep her in power and that the Labour Government didn`t have the balls to do what should be done and Unite |Ireland like it should have been done in 1922 or 1998
How many of you Brits actually are glad that Britain partitioned Ireland.????
Is it not obvious that Ireland is a separate country and that 20% of the Islands population shouldn't`t have been given say in Norn Ireland Because the government at the time needed the unionist vote to secure a future win in your Parliament.
It`s maybe nothing to do with football even tho the SCottish drowned out "God save the Queen" during an international game between two teams from the United Kingdom.so move it to the Library if you want Michael.Last edited by Johnny; 22-08-08, 12:39 AM.

So are you one of those that are from Northern Ireland and support the republic? Also what are the percentages of prods and caths in northern and republic ireland?I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. I would answer that if you knew what percentage of Prods in the whole of Ireland where planted by the British while the Irish had their land taken from them during the Penal laws?Nowadays Northern Ireland as a separate unionist state is only 94 yrs old and is opposed by 47% percent off it`s population. Not a great mandate but enough for successive Tory governments to win power by using the 15 Unionist votes in your parliament.Unfortunately the Labour government was also too weak too grant the ALL Ireland wish for Unity because it would offend the 25% off the Island of Irelands population that was Unionist.Originally posted by El Diego View PostSo are you one of those that are from Northern Ireland and support the republic? Again I realise that a Mod,probably Mike should move this to a new page.

why would they plant prods in Ireland? To make the caths weaker? I don't know much about Irish history to be honest. Am I right in thinking though that the majority of northern are prodies and the southern mainly caths?I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. Come on mate.Originally posted by El Diego View Postwhy would they plant prods in Ireland? To make the caths weaker? I don't know much about Irish history to be honest. Am I right in thinking though that the majority of northern are prodies and the southern mainly caths?
Irish history revolves around the plantation of the Protestants from scotland in Ireland. The penal laws enforced by the British stated that if you didn`t convert to the Protestant religion as a Catholic then you must split your land among your children equally. If your eldest son converted to the protestant religion then he was entitled to ALL of his Catholic fathers land.If you refused to convert to the Protestant religion then you had your land taken from you and given to a Scot.
There were loads of other underhand ways of stealing land from the Catholic population.
If your really interested Google The famine and The plantation of Ireland.
Now it`s time to move this conversation before i go "On Holiday" again.

I support Norn Iron and the Republic.
Not avidly though like the Pool."Let me say for the record, I am not a gangster and never have been. Im not the thief who grabs your purse. Im not the guy who jacks your car. Im not down with the people who steal and hurt others. Im just a brother who fight back."

if that's the way you think then why are you supporting Liverpool at this moment in time? we certainly don't play the best football, can see why you did 20 years ago and your argument would stand if you then changed to support the mancs early to mid 90's and then moved to Arsenal late 90's, your idea's a bit like the sketch from the fast showOriginally posted by badpiggy View Postloyalty is a totally overrated concept. surely there is an argument to be made for supporting whatever team play the football that appeals to you most. support spain because they play the best football around at the moment - if they change to dour, hoof-it negtive sledgers then change to a different team. your guiding principle - you're a football fan and therefore support the team which does the most to enhance the game.

Do we really need this kind of discussion on a football forum? Really couldnt be arsed talking about the rest of it but that part is wrong, there has been so much work done to stop all sectarian chants at NI matches.Originally posted by Johnny View PostCatholics are not welcome at "Winsor Park"
I know catholics who have been going for years and they say the change is amazing. In the old days they didnt feel to comfortable due to the flags and songs being sung but now all that has stopped.
To get into Windsor for a NI match you now have to block book your tickets for all of the qualifying matches, if you are caught doing anything sectarian then you are kicked out and the rest of your tickets made invalid.
I think there are still a lot of Catholics who would refuse to go due to how it used to be and I really cant blame them for it, but I am sure if they did go they would really enjoy it and realise the difference.

if you're not from the actual area, i don't think there's anything particularly logical about supporting a particular team. but time ingrains and empassions(?) so i'm unlikely to stop supporting liverpool afetr 27 years.Felching ≠ Gerbilling
